The red brake warning lamp will illuminate if a: there is a base brake problem (low fluid) check the fluid leve if low find out now where it is going, low or worn out pads/shoes, or B: the e brake pedal is not ruturing all the way up, try pulling on the release handle while pulling the pedal up, if that fixes it find out why the pedal is falling probably needs a new ebrake pedal or new cables

SOURCE: emergency brake light on 92 chevy blazer

There is a pressure switch, that gets depressed or released due to pedal position. When you engage the PB the arm is depressed...releasing the pin-like pressure switch.

Examine the pedal itself...looking where it 'touches' the car.
Depress the pedal....while watching this place. Look for a 'pin-like' switch that is allowed to extend when the parking brake is engaged, and that would be depressed in when the arm is released/disengaged.

Once you have found this, it is likely that either the:

  1. arm is slightly misaligned and does not depress the button..ie. the light stays on
  2. if it is lined up...then perhaps it does not depress the button far enough...press it to see if they light now goes out
  3. once you confirm that the light will go out..then you can adjust the physical location of the switch so that the brake pedal arm, more fully engages it
If you need other help on this, just ask...ask there are a few other solutions..but this is most likely the cause, and is a reasonably easy fix

SOURCE: 2005 aveo parking brake light stay on

I also had that problem, at first it only came on when i accelerated, then it just stayed let. After I got my tires changed it went away. I was told it was because there was a buildup of brake dust. Take the front wheels off and rinse it down and that should take car of it.

SOURCE: Abs and parking brake lights come on and stay on

There is probably a problem with you anti lock brake system. Have it checked at your local dealership. Brakes are a problem that should never be let go.

SOURCE: 95 sub emerg/parking brake light will not turn off

Only two things should normally activate the light:

Parking Brake engaged switch.

Low Fluid level in master cylinder.

I don't think you did any work to the Parking brake, but you should check it to be sure.

I believe that you would have double checked the fluid level, but please check it again.

Other things that could activate the light would be a worn or leaking master cylinder; improper brake fluid type; a damaged brake booster diphragm .

I have attached a link with excellent info on how a brake system works here.

Also, does the light always stay on, or only when you apply the brakes?

ABS light stays on if car is started with parking brake engaged.

The ABS light illuminates when there is an "out of specification" condition. From your description, it sounds like your parking brake cable may require tightening, or there may be an issue where the rear brakes are not properly releasing when the parking brake is released. With car that is nearly 20 years old, it is not inconceivable that the rear brakes and parking brake assembly may require regular service.

A good first step would be to have error codes read out by a local mechanic or auto parts store. This may give you a better indication of the specific problem. In any case, ANY brake warning should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY and corrected IMMEDIATELY, as you may have a potentially dangerous potential of catastrophic brake failure. PLEASE GET THE ISSUE FIXED RIGHT AWAY!

Brake light won t turn off at dash fluid full

That light is also tied in with the parking brake, with the key and light on pull up on parking brake pedal to see if light will go off, assuming you have a good brake pedal & not a mushy feel then it's doing it's job telling you have a hydraulic issue in the system. The switch for the parking brake is mounted on the mechanism and a single wire to it,works off a cam with pedal pushed down switch grounds the circuit.

I have 2 Brake lights in the instrument Panel one is for the hand brake what is the other one for?

In the dash, there are 2 warning lights associated with the brake system The first and most important is the Red " BRAKE " light in the dash. One light has 2 functions. It informs you that the parking brake is engaged and more importantly it informs you that the hydraulic brake system reservoir fluid is at a low level.
The system uses a wire schematic that you can see in picture #2. From the #12 fuse, the circuit goes to the warning light in the instrument cluster. From there it travels via cables to both circuits in the brake fluid reservoir and then to ground G102 which is located behind the instrument cluster . The black buttons at the top of the reservoir are test buttons for the floats in the reservoir.

Why does the parking break light stay on in my 97 Olds Cutlas Supreme. I have checked the level of the break fluid and it is full. I did have new break lines put in last year. I did have to slam on my...

Apply the parking brake with the vehicle parked, engine turned off and transmission in Park. Release the parking brake completely, then apply it again, and ensure that it is fully released. Turn the ignition on, check to see if the Parking brake warning light is on. If it is NOT on, apply the parking brake and check to see if the warning light comes on. If the light come ON wihen the Parking brake is applied,.....fully release the parking brake and check if the warning light goes OFF. If it does NOT go off, then an adjustment is needed at the parking brake switch.

Get your brakes checked!

The red brake light on the dash serves two purposes: 1) to tell you the parking brake is set, and, if the parking brake is not set, then 2) to tell you that your brake system is not up to snuff--could be as simple as low brake fluid--could be something more serious.

My parking brake and drivers door warning lights stay on. Both work fine but the lights on dash won't go out.

The Parking brake light can be set on if the cable to the brake has become loose, or if it stuck on. Check first to make sure the parking brake pedal is released fully, sometimes it will need to be manually pulled back as the tension becomes les on the cable. The drivers dooradjar light is telling you that most likely the door switch on the front dash panel on the door jamb is not functioning, replacing the switch should certainly turn the light off.

When brakes are applied parking and dash board lights come on.when headlights are on,brake lights and tail lights do not work.very first symptom was an intermittent tail or brake light out indicator...

you might have an open ground wire on your brake/tail lights .. when you apply the brakes then power would flow thru the brake light (not see ground) so would then provide power backwards thru the parking light (common ground open) to all the other things connected to the parking lights .. like the other parking lights and dash ... when you turn power on to those things (headlights on) then there is 12 volts on both sides of the light .. thats why the lights quit working ... if the missing ground is the problem then most of the lights that are improperly turning on should be at a lowered brightness level.. interesting problem .. its also possible to have a brake light bulb that has the common ground open inside or not making connection with its socket .. i would start by removing the brake lamps and see if the problem goes away .. if it does look for a broken ground or damaged lamp ..
