Transmission I have a 2000 GMC truck w/130,000 miles. The reverse gear will not engage, but will go forward in drive. Transmission problems? Do I replace it or is there another problem I should check? Need help.....

No reverse on this model almost always means a cracked cage in the transmission.Good news is you just have to have the cage changed and not much else and all should be fine and won't cost too much.

Common problem probably a 4L60E transmission The low and reverse clutches are the same ones The forward clutches are another set and then there are the 3-4 clutches in another pack. So you probably burn out the forward clutches or could be a stuck valve in the valve body. Time for a transmission specialist.

No. An emergency brake on the 86 camaro engages the pads against the rotor and the vehicle would not move either in reverse or forward. It sounds like you have a gear problem in the transmission that could be related to either solenoid or actual gear wear. Assuming the vehicle is being MOVED as you say while the engine is running.. thus providing the energy to move it.. Going in reverse has the solenoid engaged one way, drive the other way. Solenoid sounds damaged at this point. Unfortunately this probably will require a transmission rebuild.

If you have no reverse, more than likely, you have either a stripped or broken sunshell, assuming you have the 4L60E transmission. Are you absolutely sure you have all forward gears? Another indication of the sunshell being defective, will be no engine braking in manual second.

First thing I would check is Automatic transmission fluid level, you can't fill the clutch packs if there's no fluid available in the pan to do so. Does it move in forward or reverse, are there any whining/grinding noises from underneath?

Once reverse is no longer working the transmission usually needs a total rebuild. If it was one of the forward gears only, it would be a different problem, maybe one of the electronic solenoids. I had this problem on my 2000 Blazer and went through all the motions. So I talk from experience, and had to replace the transmission. Good luck!
