Can't put gas in 2007 mkx, acts like the tank is full and won't take gas

The electric fuel pump in this truck is inside the fuel tank, the fuel that the pump sits in provides cooling and lubrication for the fuel pump, when you run out of gas it is like running the engine out of oil, it damages the pump,You will need to remove the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump.

If you have this problem only when you fill your tank I would check the fuel filter first. The fuel pump will also give you problems after filling the tank due to the extra load.

Just a question. Do you run your car on empty. If so that could be your problem with an empty tank you are sucking all the dirt through the filter and making it plug up. It is better to keep your tank above half full and does not cost any more than to run on empty. All mechanics will tell you to always keep your tank above half full.

I am not sure on yours , but the newer ones you can replace the pump from the trunk area. You don't have to drop the tank. To access the pump remove the spare tire cover and you will see the pump cover.

Check your fuel filter if it needs replacement. Empty it out then connect it back. Try to start it again. Inspect the fuel filter if it filled with gasoline. Check if there is noise at the fuel tank to check if the pump is working. If it did not, inspect the fuse for your fuel pump and the relay. If both are good you may connect the fuel pump directly to the battery to see if it works. It may be a bad wiring.

Chrysler and Dodge have a fuel vapor filter that allows air out of the gas tank but filters the harmful fumes. Usually the problem happens from topping off your gas after the gas pump stops due to the automatic shut off and then putting more gas in the tank (to make the bill an even $50. or to the next $5 increment, or pumping more in just because it fits). Anyway the filter gets saturated with gas, is not able to breath, and causes a vacuum in the tank. Because of this, the anti-siphon ball is not able to float around and sits at the opening of the fuel fill tube and won't allow any more gas to be put in (acts like the car is full). If you pump super duper slow like put a nickel to hold the gas pump handle, it will trickle in without a problem, but it takes forever! Solution, get the filter replaced and don't over fill the tank.

The problem will get worse, to the point that it will leave you stranded, out of gas. The solution is simple but most dealers don't catch it. They try fuel pumps, computer updates, sensors and the problem persists. You can fix this problem yourself and without spending a nickel. Want to know how I know? I've owned two Pacifica's and both have done this. Here's why: The Pacifica has a very unique and poorly designed fuel storage system. It uses what is refered to as a saddle tank. This is so they can use the same tank in both the all wheel drive and the front wheel drive versions. If you look underneath you will see it actually looks like two tanks. The driver side is the fill side and the passenger side is the delivery side. There are actually two fuel pumps, a main pump (pumps gas to the engine) and a equalization pump (pumps fuel from the the fill side to the delivery side of the saddle tank. The problem that you are experiencing carries with it several symptoms; running out of gas when the tank is half full, the gas gauge dropping suddenly at half full, and the inability to pump more gas into the tank without shaking the car back and forth and/or pumping very slowly. This is because of the way the two sending units inside the tank send their signals to the gas gauge and the fact that only when the fill side of the tank is 100% full, can some of the gas flow over the top of the hump to the delivery side tank. You can replace pumps all day long and most likely still have the problem. So what's the fix? It's simple. Underneath the vehicle, inline with the emissions lines going to the gas tank, about middle of the vehicle, there is a small plastic air inlet filter about the size of 50 cent piece mounted to the floor of the vehicle. It is responsible for venting the tanks pressure, allowing fuel to flow into the delivery side tank. It get's full of dirt and debris. Replace it a cost of about $3.50 or just blow it out with compressed air. If you don't want to do it yourself, help those dealers out - point them in the right direction, or else they will be running in circles trying to fix the problem. If your vent tube isn't plugged, try turning the pump handle upside down. I have to do that with my mustang all the time. Ford has had gas filler problems for decades now.
