How to fix a speedometer cable

Speedometer quit working. I just replaced VSS today, prior to replacing VSS, speedometer was pegged at over 120 mph. Once I had replaced VSS and reconnected battery, I started the vehicle up and the speedometer slowly dropped down to 100 mph but never would go any lower. I put the vehicle in gear and started moving in a forward direction, the speedometer climbed to up over 150 mph and is now stuck there. Any ideas?

Well you know it does not have a speedo cable since you replaced the speed sensor in the transmission.
My guess would be a problem with the speedo or cluster.

What cause the speedometer to stop working on a 1998 ford contour?

I think you should treat yourself to a new vehicle Joe. You are just chasing faults on this one! It is well past its sell by date.

The most common reasons a Ford Contour speedometer isn't working are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer, or an electrical issue.

96 Accord VSS or Speedometer Head?

The "needle at 20MPH" is a sure-fire indicator -- it's the speedometer head. This is a common problem in this year.

I haven't found a fix other than replacing the speedometer head, sorry.

Speedometer won't work on 1995 mustang

Modern cars no longer use a mechanical cable and speedometer. They have an electronic sensor called the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) which is mounted to the transmission where the old speedometer cable used to go. If the engine was replaced, perhaps the mechanic forgot to plug the wiring harness back into the VSS? Or perhaps he damaged the wiring or the sensor during the engine overhaul. (The transmission has to be removed to remove the engine from the car.)

Speedometer quit working

There is no Speedometer cable on a 2002 Jetta. You have a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) I would have someone check the codes on it and see if the VSS is the problem.

I have a 1994 Honda Accord LX sedan and the speedometer just stopped working. My mechanic just put in a transmission that he bought from a junk yard. How do i fix this problem?

I have a 99 accord and my speedometer and odometer did not work. The problem was the VSS vehicle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.
