Deville 98 glove box is jammed not locked??

This door jamb problem happened to my car! The metal seat belt hasp was jammed in the door and this prevented the door fro fully fitting in its door frame. The slight misalignment created a stress on the door lock as it grabs the door jamb u shape. Crawl in the passenger side and look to see if the seat belt is jamming door. Use your strength to pull the seat belt hasp out of the frame.

Sounds like a badly adjusted door lock. Either the hasp on the door post is too far in, not allowing the lock to cycle to a complete lock position, or the lock is faulty. The hasp can be adjusted, so try that before looking at replacing the lock mechanism.
To check the door lock, open the door and manually turn the lock mechanism until you hear the lock click in place, then using a round object like a longish 8 mm bolt, hook it into the lock mechanism and pull real hard. It should be impossible to turn the mechanism by hand once it is locked.
It is also possible that the hasp (the bent piece of metal mounted on the door post) is too low. This will allow the lock mechanism to slip over it and not close properly.

The key you are using might be a valet key. Check to see if you can lock your glove box. If you can lock and unlock your glove box with the key then there is something wrong with your trunk lock. If the key does not work in the glove box, then you will need to order a master key from a toyota dealer.

1-insert and remove key from ignition two times

2-close and open driver door two times

3-insert and remove key once from ign.

4-close and open drvr door twice

5-insert key into ign.,then close driver door

6-turn key to on (not start) then off, twice this is rewrite mode,have all remotes to reprogram it will clear any lost remotes.

7-remove key from ignition,the door locks should cycle twice.if not start over.it may take a few tries.

8-press lock/unlock together and hold for a second

9-release,and press lock on remote,the door locks will cycle confirming program.continue to do other remotes you have,steps 8 and 9.if only one in possession,you are done. To end mode open door or insert key into ignition.

You'll need to follow the steps with no more than a 1-2 second delay between each step.. hope it works

I fixed this in a 2010 Rav4 by lowering the glovebox all the way and finding that the cover to the cabin air filter had fallen off and was jamming the hinge of the glove box. To lower the glove box, pull the glove box side walls inward until the lock tabs clear the sides of the opening and you can rotate it all the way down. Clear whatever is jamming the hinge and rotate the glove box back into position. Be sure the hinge is pushed all the way forward onto the corresponding pin before closing the glove box, otherwise there will be misalignment. There is also a plastic air piston on the right side of the glove box assembly that damps the movement of the glove box. Be sure the piston assembly is secured into the two corresponding locking pins (one on the glove box, the other on the glove box opening) before closing the glove box.

This happened to me, someone had accidentaly switched the button inside the glove compartment to lock, which locks everything except a few items for the Valet key, keeping trunk, locks and fuel door closed until that silly button is put back in original unlocked position. Goofy, but I suppose it's a good feature for some, sure had the Cadillac guy concerned for about ten minutes until he remembered that stupid lock out option inside the glove compartment!

The most common cause is something inside the glove box jammed in the latch. Push glove box door release , and GENTLY insert a flat putty knife, plastic knife, or similar type tool in the groove of door, GENTLY try to pry open the door. U will probably (hopefully) find a napkin, map, or glove (does anybody actually put gloves in the glove box?) jammed in the inside latch. Let me know how u make out.
