My 99 dodge intrepid rpm idle is too high when in park its around 2000rpm but goes back to normal when placed in gear. Sometimes it will idle at 1000 RPM or slightly above it. If I apply alittle gas and bring in to 2000RPM it will stick there. If I throw it into gear and back into park it will go to 1000 RPM or between 1000 and 2000 RPM. I dont know, it dances around. We've looked for any vacuum leaks using break cleaner and so far we havent found any leaks. It cant be a vacuum leak cause the high RPM would be consistent and not dance around. Anyone know what else I could check?

I would get a can of CRC brand throttle body cleaner and clean the throttle body and idle air control valve (located on the throttle body), use up about half the can spraying it into the engine while it is running, hold the throttle up so it won't stall, after that disconnect the negative battery cable and then drive it for a few days under varied conditions to reset the idle strategy.

SOURCE: My car rpm idle is too high when in park its

Take it to an auto parts chain store where they will run a diagnostic scan for free and tell you what sensors may be causing this. It sounds like a throttle position sensor or possibly and idle air control valve. It could also be caused by a vacuum leak causing the computer to over compensate with more fuel causing the high idle.

High rpm on its own when on idle and gear?

Check with your local Toyota dealer, this model may have had a recall notice out for this problem, if so they should fix it for free.

I have a Dodge intrepid that keeps leaving me stranded. My car just cuts off on me. While I'm driving. Sometimes while my car is in park. It just CUTS OFF! I've noticed lately that as my temp gage...

Hi there,

If you're willing, we can try checking your computer for trouble codes - this will help identify any electrical issues.

Note: there's a 50/50 chance this procedure will work (as this does work on the 1997 model):

- With gear in Neutral, start engine and rev the car to 2,500 rpm, then 'gradually' reduce revs down to idle speed.
- with park brake secure, slowly cycle the gear lever through each position (down to 1st, then back up, ending in Park)
- turn Airconditioning ON, then OFF - turn engine OFF - Within 5 seconds, perform the following Ignition Key sequence (without starting): ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON (if done correctly, your ODOMETER should display a series of 4-digit codes). Please reply back once you have your codes..... Cheers,

My 99 suburban idles at 1000 rpm in park with a new TPS at operating temp. What is the factory idle setting? how do I adjust rpm?

There no adjustment for idle, control by computer, TPS reading should be .50 volt's, you could have a vacum leak, check vacum line and check for vacum leak at base of intake manifold.
