I have a 2006 volvo s40. I turned my car on a few weeks ago and smoke began to come out the engine. Smelled like rubber. I looked and the belt between the alternator and ac compressor had burned off.

I brought it to a so called mechanic off craigslist and he said my whole engine was shot. I did have a slow oil leak in the car from a place i had it changed when they punctured a whole in it. But the car had oil in it at the time of this. I checked and it was lower than normal but still had oil. I have a hard time believing that since I have had no major problems with it. Is it possible to just be the belt?

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo S40 1.9T - oil leaking into turbo

It's very common for the turbo return line seal to leak. That is what I would check first, when it leaks, it will spray oil all over the turbo lines and the rear of the engine.

look in the trunk... either it has side panels that can be removed... or you will see a hole in the side of the lining with a sticker that points out where it is.

SOURCE: 1988 Volvo 740 Smoke from Oil Cap and Dipstick hole when removed

The smoke coming from the valve cover and dipstick is called blowby. It is combustion gases the have passes by the piston rings . A small amount of blowby is normal on all engines. The PCV system(Positve Crankcase Ventilation)pulls the gases out and directs them back into the egine to be burnt again. I would first check the PCV system to make sure it is working proper. Also a compression test of the engine will tell you which cylinder is not sealing proper. If the compression test is ok, a leak down check of the cylinders will determine if the engine is wore out.

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo s40 oil leaking in turbo, smokes white

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

SOURCE: How do you reset the check engine light on a volvo

The Check Engine light has nothing to do with changing the oil. The light is on because there is a problem with the emissions system. Even if you reset the light it will just come back on unless the problem causing it to come on is repaired. You will need to have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. That tool will retrieve the code that has been set by the ECU. The code will tell you what part is being effected, but not necessarily what part or parts are defective. To determine that takes training, experience, and diagnostic skills. I suggest you seek professional help. If the engine is running fine there is no hurry but if it is not running as it should, then do not put this off.

Have a 2001 Volvo s40. it was low on oil and check engine light began flashing. when I stopped the car, the oil was very very low. begin to see puffs of white smoke. After checking oil and adding 3 qts....

Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Top dead center timing marks for volvo s40 2.0t

If the belt broke while it was running, and IF it is an "interference engine", where a piston can strike a valve when timing is not correct, then you may have damage to the valve train. If that's the case, I would pull the spark plugs out and do a quick compression test on all cylinders, to see if you have good compression on all. One or more cylinders with little or no compression would indicate the need to pull off the head and look for damage.
If compression is good, check the ignition circuit-do you have a good, blue spark at the spark plug?
Good luck.

2005 volvo s40 65000 miles. I replaced the battery three months ago. A few weeks ago I got a check engine alert but i stopped showing. Today, I went to start my car and it was dead. My brother...

Pull the codes with a obd2 scan tool and see what faults are stored in the system computer. After that you will hopefully have a better idea of what you are dealing with and can focus your repairs more easily.

I have a 2006 Volvo S40 and the check engine light has recently come on. I just had the 60k mi service about a month ago.

Have the vehicle scanned at a local parts store and have them retrieve the code. Once you have the code, let me know and we can diagnose it properly and effectively.
