I have a 03 chevy silverado 3500 dualie diesel 4wd. I have the push button 4wd and when I shift from 4H to 2H it takes a long time to come out and when it does it comes out with a bad bang. I know that the actuator is working properly because I can hear it shift back and forth. I also removed to test it and it works properly. I believe that it is internal and mechanical. What are the possibilities?

I have had 2 4-wheel drive in the past 45 years. You go to 4-W low at almost stop position and 4-W high at a low range. If you are shifting on the go you are tearing up yourTransmission up.

If you are driving in 4H on hard surfaces and just flip the switch to 2H still on the hard surfaces it will react exactly as you describe
when in 4H as there is no internal diff action in the transfer case , a condition known as torque wind up occurs and places heavy loads on the drive line components thereby locking the gear teeth and that will not allow the separation on selecting 2W drive
if at some point one wheel looses traction for a split section, that torque wind up is reduced and the pressure on the actuator slams the selector out of engagement
4H should only be used in slippery conditions , mud, dirt ,snow, ice, grass etc where the wheels loose traction and allow that wind up to dissipate
if you continue to drive on hard surfaces in 4 H then transmission failure will occur earlier than can be expected

when in 4wd the hubs get a little heated cause they need greased so they stick into position making it hard to come out of 4wd this which i spoke of i got stuck in the senerio where i almost drove home in 4wd from 300 miles away but i called my friend he told me bought this and so i thought it could help you

your hubs just locked up on you your bearings are going to need to be packed again this is normal for this

SOURCE: 01 Chevy Silverado 4 X 4 not working. 4WD light

Having the same exact problem but with my 1999 escalade. Thought it was the actuator bought a new one installed it transfer case would engage but front end wouldnt lock. Took it out of housing left it plugged in got a friend to go through all the 4wd for me and the plunger never moved out the actuator. Checked my wiring harness which is a four prong ann it had one hot prong like it is suppose to. Traced wires even replaced dash switch same problem. Taking it to local dealership tom to have it checked for codes. I was told it could be the transfercase actuator even though its workin that actuator is what sends power to the front to engage the actuator to lock the differential.

SOURCE: I have a 2002 Chevy

Fuse is located at the end of eh dash on drivers side and the Actuator is located at the front differential and on the passenger side.
When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.

Check voltage at the connector for the front actuator (at the front differential - it looks like a large bullet that threads into the front diff.) If it has 12 volts, the actuator is the problem. If it does not have 12 volts, check the transfer case switch and the power feed to the transfer case.

I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.

GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.

Good luck. The actuator is usually the problem 90% of time but recheck all of the wire harness just to maker sure there is no short before replacing any parts. The actuator may not be fully engaged or disengaged and the fork to the spline may be what is causing the grinding.

SOURCE: 4x4 quit working

Jack up the rear wheels and put it on jack stands. Have someone get in it and put it in 4wd and drive. Release the brake. Rear wheels are spinning only right. Don't get under it but look under it and see if the front driveshaft is spinning. If the shaft is spinning but the wheels aren't it is likely a bad front axle actuator. If the front shaft isn't spinning it is a transfercase problem.

How do I turn 4wd on?

    • 1 Start your Dodge truck's engine.
    • 2 Turn the electronic transfer case from "2WD" to "4WD Lock" to engage the high range 4WD, if the dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" to "4H." The electronic transfer case is located on the instrument panel and is marked with "2WD," "4WD Lock" and 4WD Low." The lever-equipped transfer case is located to the right of your leg and is marked with "2H," "4H" and "4L."
    • 3 Shift the transmission into "Neutral" while the vehicle is either stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph to begin engaging in the low range 4WD. Turn the electronic transfer case to "4WD Low," if the Dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" or "4H" to "4L."
    Tips & Warnings
    • Indicator lights will come on and alert you that your vehicle is in either the high or low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in the low range of 4WD drive if the transmission is in gear; you must shift to "Neutral" first.
    • Many Dodge trucks allow you to shift from 2-wheel drive to the high range of 4WD at up to 55 mph--consult your truck's manual to ensure that this is possible. Do not exceed 55 mph while engaged in the high range of 4WD. Do not exceed 25 mph while engaged in the low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in 4WD unless you are on slipper or rocky roads.

4runner 92 4WD problem

This might sound like a silly question but did you put the truck in neutral before you shifted into 4L ? Reason being transfer case damage can occure if it wasnt in neutral when you shifted into 4L.

How do I shift into 4WD on my Suburban which is otherwise auto shift.

There should be a "stack" of buttons to the left of the sterring column on the instrument panel. They should be labeled something like 2H, 4H, 4L, and another for full time AWD. You need to push the desired button for the mode you are looking for. If you are in the full time mode the truck will operate in 2WD until it senses slipping and then will automatically distribute power to all 4 wheels. Some trucks, such as LS models, are not equipped with the full time mode so you'd need to push the 2H button to come out of 4WD.

I can't remember the exact insignia ont he buttons because my Tahoe is not here for me to look at. But you should notice the buttons right away. The GM's of that year did not use a lever to go to 4WD it was all push button.

I can shift from 2H to 4H easily, but have to practically come to stop before shifting from 4H to 2H

OK,
It could be that the device that shifts your drive line in and out of 4WD...is sticking, binding or not deactivating for some reason. I am not sure what type of device is used on your vehicle. Jeep uses a sliding splined collar on a 2 piece axle that used to be activated by vacuum motor on the front axle. GM uses an electric plunger motor to achieve the same result. I suggest you find whatever device it is that engages your 4WD....and start there. Good luck. It is always fun to learn something new...and fix it. Chip

4WD Problem

I would first check the wires on the transfer case for possible damage at the 2wd/4wd switch.

Mitsubishi delicia 2.6 td (shogun engine). fails to release from 4wd so two front wheel lights flashing on dash. Its an auto but have tried usual things like re-engage then disengage and straight line...

Check the super select solenoids. I had the same problem with my pajero/montero io, when I released 4WD from 4H to 2H the two front wheels lights started flashing. They stopped flashing and was solid on when I re-engaged the 4WD (2H to 4H).

My problem was a failure in the 2H solenoid, it was not producing enough vacuum. The problem was intermitent at the begining and then was permanent.

I checked the solenoids in this way:
1) The solenoid that receives the vacuum in the botton is for 2H
2) The solenoid that receives the vacuum in the top is for 4H
3) Both solenoids operate in the same way, they only change in the way they transfering vacuum from top/botton to the exit pipe (2H or 4H). The difference is that one has the vacuum input on the top and the another one in the botton.
4) The default position when you disconnect the electronics is 4WD
5) Try disconnecting the electronics and switching the output pipe between the solenoids. This will put the solenoids on 4WD position and you changed the pipes, so the 4WD should disengage.

4WD should disengage if your 4H solenoid is OK, the ligths should now flash when you change from 2H to 4H because 4WD cannot engage because the pipes are switched. You can also check the vacuum of each solenoid with your finger on each one.

If this doesn't work, try to bypass the solenoids and connect the input vacuum hose to the 2H output pipe. If the lights doesn't turn off in 2H mode it's posible that you have different problem.
