Toyota previa 1993 (about 170K) check engine light on. Why?
For no apparent reason ck engine light came on. no obvious problems with the van. Could it just be on for routine maintenance check. All fluid levels are good. Recently serviced.
I have a 1996 Previa and recently the "check engine" light came on. I was told to get it scanned at an AutoZone or somewhere and find out codes as well. My immediate question is, is this something that could wait a couple of weeks, or not? The van continues to run well, but the light is scaring me. Will the engine get damaged if I delay until after Christmas dealing with this? I support three grandkids on a single income, and I'm limited in what I can do and when I can do it (which is why I'm driving a '96 Previa, plus I love Toyotas!);)~I have a 1996 Previa and recently the "check engine" light came on. The "check engine light "comes on when the vehicle ECU sees a problem with the emission or the electronic sesnors on the engine.
I would suggest that the vehicle be taken to a auto repair service capable of scanning the car, and after it is scanned, get back to me with the code(s), and I will assist you further.

There is are 3 bolts securing the starter motor, the starter motor is located under the passenger seat area and should be accessed from under the vehicle. The key is to get the van high enough to be able to slide comfortable under the side of the van to access all bolts, only the bottom bolt has a bolt and a nut the other 2 bolts have threads which secure the starter motor onto the engine there is one bolt at the bottom, one bolt in the middle and one bolt near the very top you will have to undo the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold the dip stick first to be able to get to the middle and top bolt of the stater motor. take your time and have some patience you will get it it just takes practice.
The black wire will be connected to the body or engine of the van and the red or positive wire is connected to your starter motor. You can also use a 12 volt battery light to check the negative or positive wires. You take the 12 volt battery light and place the negative black wire clip to an earth on the vehicle, then when you touch the tip of the 12 volt battery light onto a positive wire the light will light up. Then you will know which wires are negative or positive sometimes the key has to be on for some wires to work. Cheers
There are many reasons why the engine and the emission systems fails a smog check. If you go to this pageit will give you ideas on how to pass the test next time around.
95 toyota may have an early obd2 diagnostics, which started for all cars in 96,which means it can track a cylinder misfire, when ck light flashes it can mean multiple misfire detected causing serious loss of power, you can try going to autozone they do free ck engine light code reading ,tell them you may have obd2 plug according to web,let me know codes if you get lucky.with AZ its hit or miss
