Hi I have a 2004 VW passat and the heater has gone out. When it is first turned on it will blow warm air for a few seconds then it turns cool. Help???
COLD AIR WHEN IDLING COULD BE...
1) Low on coolant - the most common reason for this heater problem. Make sure your coolant level is full.
If the level is low, it could be because the radiator cap is not sealing well or it could also be a cracked overflow container (hot coolant that bleeds out of the engine and drops to the street so you never see the puddle on your driveway).
2) An air-lock in the coolant system - it needs to be burped. Park your car facing-up the steepest hill you can find. Remove the radiator cap a (be careful - best to do when engine is cold) and rev engine to 2000 RPM for 60 seconds - hopefully the air will burp out the cap. Top it off with 50/50 antifreeze.
3) A disconnected or cracked vacuum line. I've heard about this one but never investigated.
Is the car comming up to opperating temp? If it is it may be low on coolant. If not it may be the thermostat is bad.

I have the same problem, the dealer said the heater core needs to be replace for $2100. Any suggestions?
The car gets up to opperating temp with no problem, but the heat blows cool air. The dealer did an "extensive" radiator flush but it didn't help. When the engine is reved, taking the RPMs up to around 5K it starts to get warm air. If I drive the car pretty hard the heat starts to work again, but if I go back to driving around normal it gradually gets cool. The dealer says the heater core is clogged, but if that was the case would taking the RPMs up high make any difference?
I was told at 32000 miles to have the antifreeze flushed. since that time I have been having a pporblem with the heat. Sometimes it blows warm but never hot and no matter what temperature I put it on , it stays the same. Mechanic has backflushed and tried to get out what he calls"clogs". He has had it on 7 different days but to no avail. Finally brought it to volkswagon who claimed I needed a new hear core.
Had that replaced to the tune of $1800.00 It ran hot for about 2 weeks and is now blowing freezing cold air even when on 84 degrees.
I don't know what to do I have same problem
