When I turn the key off on my Mercedes Sprinter 208 D (diesel engine) the engine does not stop running. The only way I can stop it is by putting it in high gear, holding the brake and letting out the clutch. Not so good for the clutch or drivetrain components. I think it might shut down via a vacuum mechanism since I can see no wires going to the injector pump. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks, Dwight

Hi Michael,
The motor shut off and the engine light came on, you won’t start right away and you wait a couple of days and start it again, sounds like your engine was over heated and because it is too hot and the engine frozen.
There are several kinds of engines, water cooling ,oil cooling and air cooling.
Over heated can cause many different problems for the cars, you should check step by step yourself.
Water cooling engine; if you know, you can help somebody.
1. Check the radiator see if you have enough coolant
2. Check the oil see if you have enough oil
3. check the water pump see if the water pump works fine
4. check the thermostat see it is function right.
Suppose your radiator has water or coolant, leave your radiator cap open, start your engine, let it is running 10 to 15 minutes and wait it is getting hot and see the water in your radiator, if the water moves, that means your cooling system works fine, otherwise either the thermostat frozen or the water pump was broken.
You mentioned when you re-start your car, sounds like a diesel engine, please check the where the noise from, if the noise from the water pump area, that means you need to change the water pump. When you change the water pump, change the thermostat at the same time, because when the engine over heated, the thermostat maybe damaged.
Oil cooling engine, check the oil pump. If the noise from the oil pump, you need change it.
Good luck,
Frank

Try disconnecting the electrical connector at the transmission and see if it stall when you put it in gear. You will get a service engine light, but not to worry, it will go back out once you reconnect.
By disconnecting the wire connector we can tell if it is transmission related.
Good luck, let me know.

change the switch in the top back of the injector pump ,it has one wire running to it and should be at the back of the pump where the fuel line goes into pump housing

It runs the cruise control, the heater controls usaully, and possibly something else. I would be looking for a leak in the resevoir, or a vacuum line.

After trying to start, did you pull plugs & inspect them for wet from fuel, as you said you smelled fuel like it was flooding? Also keep in mind MAP sensor also provides info to VCM which then regulates fuel delivery & timing from info supplied by MAP sensor.
