The other day while driving my car suddenly jolted and slowed down dramatically. The check engine light came on and the little exclamation came on with a message saying ''Transmission Service Required.''
What does this mean?
I just had an engine coil and spark plugs - along with my timing belt fixed just about a month and a half ago. My car seems to be fine at highway speed but not at slower speeds.
It has jolted a few times before this, since I have had my car fixed.
Thanks

Hi,
These cars had a few issues with the transmissions. Sometimes upgrading the software and flushing the transmission will help, sometimes a new valve body will fix the problem, but often the transmission will need replacement due to internal failure.
The first step is to have a shop read out all the fault codes, read all the service bulletins and tech notes from Volvo regarding the transmission problems and then make a decision based on all of that information.
Good Luck,
Bret

I have a 2001 Volvo S60. Everytime I come to a stop the transmission acts like it shifting from drive to nuetral back and forth. When I let off brake it goes in gear and runs, shifts etc.. just fine?? I notice it goes away in hot weather and gets worse in cooler weather? I'm in Arizona. I have checked the Transmission fluid level which is fine and the trans was service 25k miles ago. What could this be caused from? Thanks Tom
Nearly as excellent as the germans? Fine by me. Never liked the german rivals simply because of how common they are. This new S60 seems like the best volvo for a long time.http://www.autolinemag.com/449-volvo-s60...

Hi all, we are talking auto transmission, usually software upgrade solves the problem, takes 5 minutes and costs J20. Don't spend silly amounts, of course the garage would like to squeeze out of you as much as they can. Come on guys, It's a Volvo, it will not go seriously wrong at 100k miles !!! No chance
Same problem as everyone else. My car has ran great until now.Does anyone know how much the codes cost? The left side of my cars lights dont work Electrial Problem.I have a 2001 s60 2.4t with 135,000 Anyone know what to do.
Thanks
I would get rid of the car as soon as possible. I own a 2001 S60 2.4t and have already burned THOUSANDS on repairs. After all that now, at 80k miles, the transmission needs to be replaced. Don't waste your money on diagnostics, glycol tests, software upgrades, or transmission flushes. I have already spent over $500 on all this and didn't help at all. Three Volvo mechanics that I have talked to (unfortunately, after the $500) have all said that the 01 transmissions are junk. Face it guys, the 2001 S60 is a LEMON. I would have gotten rid of mine long ago but I still owe over $8,000 on it.

My transmission feels clunky when I put my 2002 s60t5 into gear. The same thing happens when I put it in reverse. I have 97000 miles on it now. The Volvo sales guy told me it would cost me 2500.00 to fix it. It was not the transmission itself, but a part about the size of of "basketball" that is related to the transmission. I was told I can't drive it long in this condition, because it would eventually cause transmission damage.

Thanks, I have called the dealership that normally services my car and they are running a diagnostic test to see what the code is reading. I'll let you know what they say! They said they prob wont see my car til Monday because of the holiday people aren't in.
Thanks again,
T
I had this same problem with my 2001 S60 T5. The car had only 70K miles on it so after diagnosing the problem the dealer contacted the Volvo rep and they gifted me a new replacement transmission. The dealer only charged me to install it and they did this at the discounted warranty rate. Classy move.
