Brake dragging After i changed the rear shoe and calibrated, after a while, the breakes self adjust so it gets too tight and start dragging and getting hot. I have to be loosing them with frecuency. It looks that the hand breake adjusting level dos not has a limit. Avery time i pull the hand breake, the level turns the adjusting star and does not have limit but the drum. Do you have any recomendation?

Your recomendation is good, but is a solution that modify the original design, i want to get to the origen of the problem, i want to keep the autoadjusting sistem.

Had this before no end of times, their is a sprung piece of steel on the opposite side to the adjusting lever and you have left it off.drill a hole through backplate in line with adjuster and remove the auto adjuster, then when you service vehicle adjust through hole in back plate.simple is best

dreamt about this the other night, thought about it afterwards i didnt tell the guy to check the wheel cylinders,so intent was i on explaining my bodgy fix ,which it is but it does work.Well anyway heres what a right old bodger like myself would do ?one who doesnt like spending un necessary cash.first check drum on the outside lip and check for a ridge,if it has one then grind down with 4inch angle grinder so drum will fit over shoes without leaving gap between shoe and drum, next ask er indoors nicely to sit in car whilst you put two nice big screwdrives between shoes and lip on backplate the push brake pedal down slowly and feel the force and movement excerted on each shoe,is piston coming out of cylinder ???then release pressure on brake and see if pistons go back in with only spring pressure.if they dont then lightly clamp flexible brake pipe with mulgrips and remove pistons and clean and lightly rub inside of cylinder bore with some fine wet and dry with a smear of oil on it then rebuild cylinders.now offer up drum over shoes and with a wiggle try to determine how much you need to bring adjusters up till drum just turns nicely with a slight sound of the shoes rubbing.then tap with hammer and spin again as tap with hammer will centralise shoes and bit more taking up can be done. Now remember to slacken off handbrake cable before you start, now do other side then re adjust handbrake too the regulation three notches ,then check wheels can still turn.if brake are still overjusting check handbrake cable incase thats sticking and seizing up as well.If your er indoors will not help, you are welcome to mine free of charge

Rear break drum wont go back on after changing shoes. the adjuster is in all of the way, everything is assembled correctly and I squeezed the brakes together. they are self adjusting.

You may have to squeeze the shoes in towards each other. If you have everything assembled correctly the drum will go on right

Changed brake shoes and still no brakes

There are a few possibilities for why this is.

1. Wrong size shoes.
2. Excessively worn drum.
3. Didn't adjust self-adjuster wheel out far enough.

People often make the third error since most who change their own brake shoes do not have the drums resurfaced. As a result, there is a ridge on the outer edge of the drum that doesn't get removed. In order to get the drum over the shoes, the shoes must be under-adjusted to allow for the ridge. Then, once the drum is on the shoes aren't tight enough. You can adjust some cars thru a slot in the rear plate behind the drum, but not all.

Why does my right rear tire lock up?

I to would suspect the emergency/parking brake. Many times because of non use of the EM brake system the cable seizes and when it comes time to change brake shoes they cause problems. There is a flat bar that is part of the self adjuster/parking brake system that might need to be removed to prevent this problem.

Parking Brake won't engage

check that the brakes are not self adjusting and that you have to apply the brake several times to wind the shoes out to the correct position

I put new brakes in my saturn. i put new front calipers, rotors and pads and power bleed front only. i also put new brake pads in rear but did not replace drums.after all that i can't get a hard brake...

try adjusting the rear brake shoes but.....spin the rear wheels first is u get the feeling of the shoes grabbing then releasing ( the tire gets loose then tight as u rotate it) u will need to have the drums cut on a brake lathe or replaced...when u have this done , then adjust the rear shoes until u get a slight drag on the rear wheels..go pump the brake pedal to seat the shoes if the wheel spins free adjust the shoes more an repeat until they have a slight drag after pumping the brake pedal

Replaced back shopes on ford ranger 2006. seem to drag and squeel even if i back off the drag great for first mile or so but when they heat up the priblen=m staerts

You have either the self adjusting mechanisms too tight or the E brake cables are sticking or incorrectly adjusted. It could also be a siezed wheel cylinder as well. I would doubt the later if it was both wheels though I would not totally discount the possibly. Did you get grease, oil, or brakefluid on the shoes? Was one shoe smaller that the other. They could be on backwards. Some brakes have a primary and a secondary shoe. The larger shoe goes to the rear.

Finding the adjuster on drum brakes

The rear brakes have a self-adjusting mechanism that does not require adjustment for proper drum to shoe clearance when brake shoe has been replaced or brake drum has been removed for some other service.
Adjustment is automatically accomplished by depressing brake pedal 3–5 times after all parts are installed. Then check brake drum for dragging and brake system for proper performance.

I just did a rear brake service with new brake shoes and now my e brake lever in the drivers side goes all the way to the floor before getting tight

If you put it all together correctly your problem may be that you did not adjust the brakes after you installed them. You need to turn the adjusting wheel till the brakes shoes just start to drag against the drum.Usually using a brake tool with the wheel on.

Cannot remove rear brake drums

You need to back off the adjusters on the rear shoes to allow the worn drum to pass over the brake shoes.
A worn drum will have a unworn drum section on its outer edge where the brake shoes don't normally rub.
This must unworn ring must be able to pass over the brake shoes before you can get the drum off.

Two tools should be used through the brake adjuster access hole.
One small diameter blade screwdriver can be used to push the self adjuster lever away from the notched adjuster nut, while a second flat bladed tool is used to lever the adjuster nut, rotating it so as to back off brake shoe expander adjustment.
