Speedometer not working

2002 dodge neon speedometer quit working about 2 weeks ago and since it quit the engine runs very loud while in drive. could the speedometer cable have came off and if so would this be why the car is loud while in drive?

My 2002 Dodge neon speedometer stopped working in the last few days. I noticed two weeks ago that, when starting the car, both the speedometer and tach needles immediately pegged around to the top end, then both fell back to about 2/3, then 1/3, then both dropped to zero. When driving, both worked fine. Now, with the engine started or stopped, both needles look like they are at zero, but they are actually pegged all the way around to the top. All fuses are fine.

    Any ideas are appreciated.

my car was running loud when i drive, not when i idle, we changed the transmission and now the speedometer doesn't work. we changed the sensors on the transmission and the speedometer still doesn't work and my car still runs loud. i have also noticed that my RPMs run higher than before the loudness. I'm at a loss of what it could be

Check your fuses to see if there is one blown.

2002 dodge neon wont shift outta first and speedometer wont work ,already replaced input and output sensors

Maybe the speedometer connection at the transmission might be interfering with the shift lever at the transmission. Not sure if this would apply to the 2002 Neon but on some older model cars I believe it could happen. Just a thought.

Speedometer not working

speedometer runs off a sensor in the transmission. I would check first the wires to the sensor to see if there is a break in it. if wiring is good the replace the pickup unit for the speedometer.

Why don't any of the dashboard dials on my 2002 dodge neon work? (speedometer, rpm, odometer, etc)

run the fault codes and look for a TCM problem as they are all controlled by this module.

Speedometer of 2003 dodge neon does not work and gas gauge is jumpy. replaced 2 input and output vss sensors and still won't work. no codes show on scanner

some of these have had problems with the dash assembly causing alot of problems with gauges and lights and speedometers.if there are no codes in the computer and weren`t any before you replaced the vss sensors then you spent money you didn`t need to.

Speedometer quit but sometimes works. 98 neon

Check the ground wire from the engine to the firewall. It is a flat braided uncoated wire and should be easy to distinguish. Make sure that it is clean and tight.

Why wont my speed odometer work on my 2002 dodge neon rt????please help

The speedometer is driven by the computer which uses the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the transmission, to determine how fast the vehicle is traveling. It is not uncommon for the VSS to go out unexpectedly, usually the check engine light will come on when it malfunctions, and the computer will lock the transmission in 2nd gear, which will allow you to limp the car in to a repair shop.

Speedometer/tach stopped working

There are 2 sensors on the engine that sent a signal to the computor and speedometer and tach. When one of these goes bad it can make the speedometer and tach go all over the place and also just stop working. This can also cause all types of engine running problems because the information being sent to the PCM will be incorrect all so. The units are easy to replace once you find them, it seems that they are located in different areas of the engine with each year the vehicle was put out.
