Obd code p0440 for check engine light on 2000 Toyota Corolla

This check engine light came on earlier this week on my 2000 Toyota Corolla . A fellow at work plugged in his "reader" and got the obd code of p0440. He shut the light off. I don't need a sticker until June 2009. My check engine light has come on and off for a couple of years, usually showing an 02 sensor problem. Is there anything I should do now, or can I wait until June 2009? I don't want to spend more money on tis "idiot" light if I don't have to. Thanks!

P0440 code means that the evap system has a leak. This could be caused by a bad or improperly installed gas cap. Either that or the purge solenoid has failed or the canister is plugged and not working properly.

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks
Sincerely,

JC

if you want to reset the engine management light you can buy a scanner to do this you need to make sure your vehicle is obd 2 compatible a phone call to your dealer will confirm this, A scan of the computer will probably show a fault code or codes, however this is only a first step in diagnosing the problem some scan tools give freeze frame data that may provide a clue.
