You'll need a shop manual for the procedures.
P1494 JEEP Description
The Evaporative emissions system is designed to prevent the escape of
fuel vapors from the fuel system. Leaks in the system, can allow vapors
to escape into the atmosphere. The leak detection system tests for
EVAP system leaks and blockage.
During the self-diagnostics, the Powertrain Control Module (
PCM) first checks the Leak Detection Pump (LDP) for electrical and mechanical faults. If the first checks pass, the
PCM then uses the LD pump to seal the vent valve and pump air into the system to pressurize it. If a leak is present, the
PCM will continue pumping the LDP to replace the air that leaks out. The
PCM determines the size of the leak based on how fast/long it must pump the LDP as it tries to maintain pressure in the system.

Hi Everyone! Just realized my inspection is due in 2 days and I started my Jeep up this morning to take it to be inspected and of course the great timing that it has threw a 1494 check engine light. It had a rough start last week; however, I just attributed it to the cold wet weather. It wasn't so much a rough start as it started right up, but it was "chuggy" and choppy - maybe a misfire? I immediately restarted and it was fine ... any idea on this? Back to my 1494 ... I re-tightened my gas cap since I know that is the most common problem and disconnected my battery ... the cel is gone now and after driving and restarting it hasn't come back. If it isn't this simple and I have to have repairs made ... how much am I looking at? I live in NYC and am a blonde female so I tend to notice that prices quoted to me are often WAY more then they should be, so I like to know a range before I go in! HELP : /
Is this something dat can be fixed at home and not in a shop
