Previa Heater Problem

My 94 Previa will not warm up in the winter. I am in San Antonio, Texas which is not exactly an extremely cold environment. In the winter when the heater is turned on the temp guage drops so far down that sometimes the transmission goes back into 3d gear versus overdrive. I have gone so far as to completely block the radiator with a cardboard panel. That is the only way I can keep a little bit of heat in the van. Nothing else has worked, including any number of termostats. Very puzzling and damn cold in the winter! Any answers, let me know Thanks, Brad My 1993 Previa LE heat has stopped working. Haven't used heat all summer, now weather's cooling and can't get any heat to come out! A/C works fine (although mildly noisy ringing sometimes). Any ideas on what to check? We need the heat soon! thanks

Yes, check the thermostat. secondly if your van has more than 100,000 i recommend that you check the radiator cap for leaks this is done with a test kit.
* unfortunately the vans are know for blowing head gaskets. Its not uncommon to go through two head gaskets in the lifetime of the vehicle because its just a poorly designed motor."Sorry Toyota" Well I Hope this helps, good luck!

Previa heaters are usually ultra-reliable.
So, regarding your question, the only reason for the temp gauge to drop down with the heater on is the thermostat is sticking open, or you have a lower than recommended thermostat installed. The factory thermostat is a 192 degree F/89 degrees C stat. Down your way, a lot of the parts places vend the "summer" thermostats, and I suspect that this is your problem.
Look to see what the temp degrees that are printed on the stat. Should be 192 F or 89 C. The "summer" stats are 185 F/ 85 C. Also, make sure that your stat has a small "wiggle valve", some aftermarket stats do not have this. Very important. Install the stat with the "wiggle valve" pointing straight up/12 o'clock...
Regarding your trans dropping out od OD, this is because the coolant temp is dropping below 172 degrees F. This is the threshold for the OD to engage. Below 172/no OD engagement.

The heater on my Toyota Previa is not working and the temp gauge is not moving even when the car has been running for a while. Please help

the engine cooling system thermostat could be stuck open. This will cause the engine to take forever to warm up, especially in cold weather. The thermostat is inexpensive and easy to change. A new one could fix your problem quickly.

When the engine is started in a cold environment ( Canadian winter) there is a loud rattling noise. This noise disappears once the engine in warmed up. There is a corresponding high idle ( 1800 RPM) until...

it is probly your valve train starving for oil.I would try using a thinner oil in the winter time or just switch over to a full synthetic oil this should help.Once you switch to full synthetic oil though it is recomended to stay with it it is not good to go back and forth from synthetic to regular oil.

Transmission

Most likely a fluid change and the new Dexron 6 trans fluid will cure this issue, make sure to do a full service, fluid and filter. Note, Dexron VI replaces all previous Dexron fluids and I know from personnel experience it works great, longer trans life and smoother shifts and less problems like yours.
