The gear shift on my mom's '98 Oldsmobile Silhouette won't engage. It's "loose." To give a little more detail -- she has a little trouble getting the key out AND the back ventilation windows won't open -- in case that helps any to diagnose the problem -- or, could be an unrelated issue. If a solution is to check the transmission fluid, can you tell me where that is located?

There is no simple solution for this problem. A mechanic will have to see the linkage and cable to diagnose the problem and affect repairs. Sorry.

Under the bottom of the radiator on the there is a drain ****, you will have to raise the car and crawl under it to see it, be careful to not break it, the screw in plug is fragile, it will be hard to unscrew.

Where is the shift solenoid on a 2000 Oldsmobile silhouette located??

Inside the transmission . Which shift solenoid ? 1 - 2 , 3 - 4 , 2 - 3 ?
The shift solenoid valves are two identical, normally open, electronic exhaust valves that control upshifts and downshifts in all forward gear ranges. These shift solenoid valves work together in a combination of ON and OFF sequences in order to control the positions of the 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shift valve trains. The PCM monitors numerous inputs in order to determine the appropriate solenoid state combination and the transmission gear for the vehicle operating conditions.

'02 alero 5 spd wont engage gear

My first question is - have you had the trans filled with fluid ?
If the fluid level is now normal, and you can't shift the gears, you may have damaged the main shaft inside the trans.

Jeep wrangler 2005 automatic floor gear shifter is loose won't engage stuck in park

try pushing the knob down onto the shifter a little bit then try and shift. Sometimes if that knob is raised even a little bit it will be locked in park. Can't be 100% sure without seein it but worth a shot. Hope that helps you.

1995 silhouette will start but won't go in gear at all, I tried all gears it just won't move

If the fluid level is correct and it will not go into gear, you need a mechanic. Have the car towed to a transmission shop. It is possible that your flexplate has sheared loose from the engine and your transmission is OK (caused by shifting into gear at high revs). Worse case, you need your transmission rebuilt.
Sorry, but this could be expensive.

03 Oldsmobile Silhouette 3.4L Starter stays engaged at times.

Sounds like time for a new starter. While it could be electrical, in that the starter circuit is remaining engaged, more than likely it is mechanical. As the starter wears, you get play in the starter gear. Replacing the starter should take care of it. If you have recently had the starter off or replaced it, it could be misaligned, causing a similar problem.

I have a 2002 Silhouette that won t shift into 4th, stays in 3

it may have worn valve body coponents or there stuck, the first thing i would try is a bg trany flush, this helps 75% of the time and its cheaper than a rebuild, its worth a try, you may even ask to have the filter changed if its never been done,
