Oil pressure switches have about the same life expectancy on all vehicles (about 5 yrs). They are screwed into an oil passage. When the engine is under pressure, oil pushes against a diaphragm (or flexible partition) inside the switch. As long as the oil is pushing against the diaphragm, it prevents the metal electrical contact on it from making contact with its inner base, which would complete the circuit to the oil light. When the diaphragm leaks, oil seeps through the outer housing of the switch. As the oil seeps through, it doesn't maintain the pressure required to keep the light out (especially at idle), causing the light to sometimes flicker. It will also create oil leaks.

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu. Yesterday we were checking all my fluids and they are where they should be, including the oil. When we check the antifreeze, there is oil in the reservoir, a thick, black layer...

Are you sure it is oil? I have a 2000 chevy malibu also and something similar happened to be but come to find out the radiator just needed to be flushed out and it was old rusty deposits.

Does a 2000 chevy malibu have a fuel reset button and where? it just died while at a stop sign, so we thought it was out of gas. we put gas in and it still will not start.

Hello mellissa, the 2000 malibu does not have a fuel reset switch. Check the fuel pump relay in the fuse box under the hood. Check for fuel pressure. You should be able to hear the fuel pump come on for a few seconds when you turn the key to the run position....Your fuel pump might have failed.
I hope this helps.

Can't find the gas reset button

Chevy doesn't use a fuel pump reset switch, it does have a circuit that turns the fuel pump off if the engine losses oil pressure. Ford does use a reset switch and does have a button you press to reset it.
