Just a thought, the pump has a check vale in it that keeps the fuel from draining back when the engine is off. If the check valve is bad, then the fuel drains back and creates an air pocket that doesn't allow it to pump the fuel, basically it create a vacuum lock in the pump so no fuel can get through it. So, you can't rule out the pump completely just because it stays running. Now I know that I'm just a computer tech here and the 6 years of shop foreman as a auto and diesel mechanic don't count, but it's a thought.

Even if the pump works after is started, you cannot be sure the pump is not faulty.
The pump is energised by a solenoid, test the solenoid, if it is faulty replace it.
If solenoid is working and pump is being energised properly (you can test this) then, even if pump works it can jam up each time you stop it, in this case replace the pump.

Sounds like you have a leak in the fuel system. This will cause the pump not to be able to get suction.
there is a big fitting on the right side of engine up front this is the fuel fitting need to check fo vacuum. have you replaced filter??need to be replaced every 15k miles if you have then might have a cut oring

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

The only pump you have is the injection pump.Dang some of these so called experts!!!!

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

The fuel system on this truck has to be 100% airtight your problem is a leak somewhere from the injection pump to the tank

You need to get the air bubble released from the pump so all you need to do is manually open the pump screw and the pump out some diesel which will take care of the starting and jerking problem.

You may also check your inline fuel pump under the truck should also be a water seperator inline with it, should have12volt key on cranking

  • 10 more comments
  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

it should be on the frame rail, also i am not sure if this has a pump inline or in tank but check your filters for clogging and listen for the pump under the truck, your injection pump should be ok if you can prime and run it but for some reason you are lacking flow -jeff please rate

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

pump is in the tank try smacking the tank with a big hammer also how many miles are on the truck?

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

i also see a connector you should be able to get to to test for power and ground at the fuel pump if smacking the tank has no effect -jeff

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

okay so it will stay running and is drivable if you prime it first?

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

6.5-liter predecessor to this engine, had a history of failures.

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

you need to put a pressure gauge on the truck and see if you are leaking back pressure when you shut the truck of there is a check valve probably in the pump or inline somewhere otherwise does the truck run okay on full throttle?

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

can you get a fuel pressure gauge on the truck? these trucks run very high pressure and you are most definatly leaking pressure down when you shut the truck off this is why you are priming every start, does the truck run okay at full load ie. uphills , highyway and such?

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

gm had a problem with these high pressure fuel pumps leaking down

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

GM also had a problem with the fuel injector orings leaking air causing hard or no starts due to air drawing past them try spraying ether around the injectors next start, i would have to guess you are loosing your pressure though the pumps run around 350 -$400 not cheap so be sure to get the pressure specs and rule out any leaks fuel or air please rate -jeff

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

just to clarify the in tank pump would have your check valve, the injector pump is obveously not the problem -jeff

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

what is the status of you problem, if you shut the tuck off and try to restart it immediatly will it restart ? or does this happen after about How? long after sitting? please advise i can help you if you provide me with more information -jeff

If the injection pump isn't pushing fuel through the lines to the injectors, it may have a faulty solenoid. Listen for a "click" inside the pump when the ignition switch is turned on. No click means the solenoid and/or pump need to be replaced. If it clicks but there's no fuel coming through the injector lines (and the filter and lines are not obstructed), the pump is probably bad and needs to be replaced.

thank u...welcomejee...check ur fuel injector..because it is used to inject the fuel into the cylinder..during suction stroke air oly drawn from the atmosphere..so better check the propeller(fan)..whether it **** in right path or not.
mr welcomejee try to give better solution than me..ur most welcome.

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

Most diesel engines have large pistons, therefore drawing more air and fuel which results in a bigger and more powerful combustion Diesel engines use compression ignition, a process by which fuel is injected after the air is compressed in the combustion chamber causing the fuel to self ignite

Read this posting, the problem may be the optical sensor in the fuel pump unit.

  • SYMPTOM: Your 6.5L Diesel stalls just as if someone had reached over and turned off the ignition switch.
  • CAUSE: There are two main causes. The first and most common is the PMD (also called FSD). The other possibility is the Optical Sensor located in the pump itself.
  • DIAGNOSIS: OR "How do I know what to replace?" Simply put, if your check engine light is not on and you experience stalling, it is a 95+ percent certainty that you need a new PMD. If your check engine light is on, you need to get your codes checked. Auto Zone and others will do this for free. If you ONLY have codes P1216, P1217, 35, 36 or any combination of those, you need just the PMD. If you have codes P0251 or PO370, 17, 18, or any combination of those, you should consider the injection pump suspect.
  • So what is this PMD? PMD stands for Pump Mounted Driver. The same part is also called an FSD or Fuel Solenoid Driver. (One is GM terminology, the other Stanadyne terminology). It is a "black box" about the size of a pack of cards mounted on the driver's side of the injection pump.
  • !
  • Check to be sure your lift pump is running. The lift pump delivers fuel to the injection pump and is located on the frame rail under the driver's seat. The lift pump will NOT cause stalling, but when it goes bad, the injection pump runs hotter which shortens PMD life. See lift pump under products for instructions on checking the lift pump.
  • Make sure you have good clean fuel with no water
  • For the very thorough individual: Check all electrical connections - battery terminals, engine and body grounds, and all fuel injection pump wiring including the multiple grounds on the intake manifold. With the batteries disconnected open up all connections (including those at the bulkhead) and look for loose or corroded connections, but do not spread open the terminals. Take your time and look carefully for chafed wiring. One connector of particular interest is the large15-way connector near the back of the intake manifold where the main engine harness meets the fuel injection harness which then runs forward under the intake to the injection pump. This connector is commonly the site of severe corrosion, especially in northern states and may cause a variety of intermittent problems.
  • Those who are very technical and equipped with the proper tools can perform a couple more steps to ensure that they have correctly identified the issue. If the duty cycle measured at the red closure signal wire (Terminal E at the PMD) is not the same as the duty cycle measured at the light green PCM command wire (Terminal A at the PMD) then the PMD has failed. Because of the difficulty of this step and the fact that this issue is so common, only the most exacting individuals perform it.
  • If your truck over-responds to the throttle and revs up very rapidly at only light throttle application, or revs up on its own, internal injection pump wear is almost certainly the cause.
  • !

Sounds like you have damaged the fuel tank mounted fuel pickup pump. The pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel it is immersed in, so when you lost all the fuel you likely ruined the pump.

1995 international flat six diesel 466 wont run changed fuel filter losend lines bleed out air wont run squirt eathier starts dies

Make sure you pre fill the filters with clean fuel. Locate the hand primer usually near the fuel lift pump. Unscrew the top till it pops up. Pump repeatedly until it gets hard to pump. You can crack the injector lines while pumping till fuel comes out or have someone crank the engine with the starter while you continue to pump the hand primer. Make sure after it's running the pump is pushed all the way down and tightened back up

Duramax will not start plugged in ran then died wont start again. any ideas?

I take it that your engine is a diesel (glo-plugs) in which case the pumping of the accelerator is just good exercise for your leg but does nothing for the engine as it does not have an accelerator pump. faulty glo plugs will only make for hard starting on cold mornings so that will be out also. So the next ting that will give some idea as to the problem will be to have the fault codes read and that will show up the area and sensors that are causing your faults.

My 03 duramax started fine this morning but only ran for a fiew minnuts then shut off on its own and now it wii turn over but not start it seems to have fuel pressure can it be cam sensor or crank sensor...

To start with, a Duramax Diesel runs on an excess of 20,000 Psi of fuel pressure. Unless you have some specialized equipment,(and know how to use it) I do not know how you could possibly tell that the fuel pressure is OK.

Duramax Diesels also have had a lot of problems with glow plugs. This could explain why it will not start. Then again, it COULD be something totally different like a bad sensor. This could even be caused by a faulty fuel pressure sensor or a bad fuel pressure regulator.

The best way to find out is to scan the engine computer for fault codes and read the engine data from the computer to see if all of the sensors are providing the correct input to the computer.

I have a 2002 chev silverado 2500HD duramax 4x4, The truck starts only when given a shot of quick start in the airbox. After it runs great you can shut it off then re start it fine. It will not start...

You need new glow plugs. Im guessing you live somewhere kind of cold maybe. It starts just fine after running because the motor is already warm. Quick start will work.....or at least it did for me until I used one mornig and went to crank and BOOM. It blew my air filter case to pieces and caught the filter on fire. Starting fluid is not meant for diesel motors. If you cant afford new glow plugs what worked for me is turn on the key all the way but dont crank wait 10 sec then repeat a few times and it should crank unless its really cold out or the plugs are really bad. Trust me thats what it is. I replaced mine and now It cranks right up even when its super cold.

Priming fuel system on a 8.1L diesel engine 2001chev 1 ton dual

Well, one problem is, if its an 8.1, its not a diesel. The 8.1, or Vortec 8100, is a gas engine. The DuraMax is a 6.6 engine. There is usually not a priming system on a gas engine, because the fuel pumps will usually get it through the smaller filters used quick enough you dont need them. However, if it is a DuraMax engine, then right on top of the fitting where you mount your diesel filter, there is a primer pump and an air bleed valve. What you do is, open up that air bleed valve ( its a little black plastic octagon shaped thing on the top of the filter mount) then you pump the primer (the silver button looking thing) until you get diesel squiting out the air vent without too many air bubbles or gurgles.
