Skdavisbob, This sounds like you have a problem with the brake booster that is attached to the firewall. When these boosters fail it is like trying to stop a house as you describe here. There is a one way check valve near the top of the booster that uses vacuum from the engine to operate. Inspect the hose and be sure that it is attached at both ends and that there are no leaks in this hose. This can be done by running the engine and listening for a leak. (hissing noise) Replace the hose if faulty. If you don't hear any vacuum leak then turn the engine off and pull the check valve out of the booster. This takes a little effort as it is quite secure in the grommet. You should hear a vacuum leak for a split second because when the valve is removed it will allow air in (if it is working properly) and you should hear the leak. If you don't hear the hiss, then test the valve by blowing through it both ways. As stated, this is a one way valve and you should be able to blow air through one way but not the other. If you can blow air both ways then the check valve is faulty. If the hose and valve are working properly then you will have to have the booster replaced. Good luck with this.

Get inside your car roll up the windows with the engine running press the brake pedal. If you hear air spewing while you press the brake pedal 99% chance that you're brake booster is bad you should not be able to hear air when you press that brake pedal. I wish you well on solving your problem I hope this helps.

HI,
Looks like a vacuum leak in the brake master servo.
Check the vacuum leakage at the bottom of the brake master( round black drum ), hose is connecterd on the side and it is connected to the intake manifold.
Hope that brakes solved.
Thanks for asking FixYa!

Check the vacuum to the brake booster to make sure the line is not loose. if the line is good and it has engine vacuum on the line with the engine running , then you have a bad brake booster.

SOURCE: brake pedal will not depress

Let the fluid out of the master cylinder or from a line. If the pedel  then goes down w/o the fluid, then the booster is working ok. Rebuild or replace the master cylinder.

Brake pedal hard halfway hard to stop

Not sure why you have scanner readout, but the most likely culprit in the hard brake pedal/hard to stop category would be a faulty power brake booster.

When driving I press on the brakes and they push back up and it's hard to stop what could be wrong I checked the brake fluid and the lid was open a little

Try a brake servo test by pumping the brake pedal until hard and keeping pressure on the pedal and start the engine and if the servo is working the pedal should move down slightly if not servo is faulty
If you have ABS the pump could be faulty and that needs a trained engineer to test and repair if possible

1997 nissan pathfinder le 3.3l - Brake lights won't turn off - replaced stop switch and relay combo already. any ideas?

The brake switch will stop all current to the brake lights. As soon as the brake pedal moves just off of its fully up position, the switch makes contact and passes current on to the brake lights. You can operate it by hand to check if everything is right. izzit adjustable? The switch is the last thing in the path to the brake bulbs, so it has to work right, right off the brake pedal!

I've had my 2008 ford focus 1.6si for 7 months now and never had a problem with the braking system. A week ago my bad luck changed. Whilst I was driving and braked for the stop sign the brake pedal all...

Hello, The Vibration in the brake pedal was likely the Antilock brake unit starting to work. It works when the 4 wheel sensors detect that the wheels are moving at different speeds from each other. This reduces skidding and pulling from a locked up wheel.

You need to have the Brake pads checked for wear. The rear brakes can have an additional problem because there are 2 sets of brakes in back, the Service brakes and the Emergency brakes. Sometimes the pads come unglued from their mounts and jiggle loosely in their holders.

Your Brake booster is also questionable along with the Master cylinder. This can explain the lack of power assist when you press on the brake pedal. While your problem can be all of these things, if only 1 or 2 are bad, you may not need to buy everything.

There are electric tests available for the ABS unit for Diagnosis. The rest require a manual and visual evaluation. I hope my Solution is very helpful towards fixing your problem.

There is never a test or reason to pump your brakes

Accomplishes absolutely nothing.

There is no pressure in a braking system at all,
until you SLOWLY apply the brake pedal.

Then less than 1" off movement in the master cyl,
will develop 600 to 1800 lbs at the wheels

Release the brake pedal, the system goes to zero,
IT DOES NOT HOLD ANY PRESSURE

To answer your question

You not suppost to press the pedal hard
The saying goes--you apply the brakes,
not force the pedal arm and pin into the
vacuum booster, as though you want to damage it

When your driving what happens ?
You have higher manifold vacuum and
thus your pedal is normal, why the VACUUM
brake booster

Gas pedal sometimes hard to push, i have replaced

sounds like your brakes are taking too long to disengage. Your problem may not be your gas pedal. If your brakes are sticking it could be holding your acceleration back just a bit until the car gets moving again.

98 Chevy pickup brake lights just stopped working has 2 separate fuses both are fine One relay labeled brake it tests OK Stop light switch replaced Rest of the tail lights work fine What else could B?

have you tried to find the brake pedal switch? follow the brake pedal under the dash and there should be a switch that the brake pedal presses to activate the lights when you push it in . if everything else has been checked then I suspect that the switch has moved enough to not work or it may be just bad. let me know if this was it.... hope this works
