1996 cadillac eldorado new battery new alternator still wont charge
Hey Jeff. Never assume that "new" alternator is good, but lets assume it is.The actuator wire that goes into the field of the alternator HAS to be hot with the key in run position. (both wires will be). If not, it wont charge. If those two are hot with the key on, the alternator is bad.
1996nourthstar eldirado hard start then surges while idle
Could be a lot of things, but the fuel pressure regulators break frequently and that causes an extended crank. As a matter of fact, if it were my car, I would just put one on.
Is the " service engine soon" light on? If is, I would start there. I think checking the codes is easy on that year. Turn the key on. Press and hold the "off" and "warmer" buttons on the climate controls until the instrument cluster lights up like a tree. Release the buttons and let us know if there are PCM codes. They are 'Pxxxx' format. If there aren't any, it will say no PCM codes.
It could also have a vacuum leak, or a clogged injector. Something like that...
How do I change the oil in a 1996 eldorado?
If you have more than 100,000 miles, go for the High Mileage oil. If has the additives you need. I suggest you buy an oil filter tool while at the store to make sure you get the right size. Jack the front of your eldo on the passenger side or drive the car up on ramps. Make sure it is secure. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Crawl under the car and take your 14MM or 15mm socket and ratchet, your new oil filter and filter tool with you. Remove the oil drain plug located on the rear of the oil pan. Make sure you catch the oil in a drain pan to be disposed of properly. The oil filter is located underneath on the front of the engine. After the oil has drained completely from the oil pan, replace the drain plug. Make sure it is tight but be careful not to over tighten. Remove the oil filter. Hint: take a plastic bag you used to bring the supplies home to help capture the old filter and the oil that is prone to spill. Dip a finger in the old oil and lubicate the rubber o-ring attached to the top of the NEW oil filter. This helps the filter to seat and to be tightened properly. Hand Tighten the new filter in place and wipe up any spills. Remove the old oil, filter, and tools and exit to the top side. Using a funnel, pour five quarts of oil into the oil openning. Remove and wipe the end of the dip stick and reinsert into the dipstick tube. Remove the dipstick and read the level. It should be just under a quart low. Replace the oil cap and the dipstick. Lower the vehicle to it's normal position. If you had the car on ramps, you'll have to start the engine to get it down. At any rate once the car is lowered, start the engine and check for leaks underneath. If you have leaks, you'll need to tighten or repair the cause of the leak. If there are no leaks, shut off the engine and remove the dipstick to re-check the oil level. You will probably need to add the sixth quart to get the crankcase full. DO NOT OVER FILL.
