1993 Mercury Capri Questions & Answers
1993 capri with no pulse to the injectors. Engine runs when fuel is poured into the throttle body. Pressure seems to be ok and holds at 42 psi on the fuel rail as well as atrail side of fuel filter. I
Injectors get their power from the main relay and get their ground signal from the computer. The power to the injector wire is BK/W , The input power wires to the relay are blue. Jump these two wires to bypass the relay. The blue wire gets it's power from the EGI fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. If fuse is ok, jump a 12 volt source wire to terminal on relay to repair problem.
Capri main relay
This Mercury Capri main engine control relay is located under/behind the LH headlight (bucket) and interfaces with the PCM/ECU. this is a double relay.... one set of contacts according to the wiring diagram. runs just the injectors.. the other set run a bunch of other devices on the motor.
According to the manual the STO (self test output) of the ecu/pcm....when tested...is supposed to read STO low or 0 volts and if anything would be wrong the needle on an analog V ohm meter will sweep back and forth from low to 12 volts to spell out the
code for the problem. When it stays at 12v would that indicate that the PCM is bad??
Check the main relay that is located behind the drivers side headlight can but to do so remove the coolant overflow bottle. In the process of testing, check for corrosion on the blue wire that goes into the green three wire connector.repair any brakes in the wires
How hard to change oil pump on mercury Capri.build date 09/93
remove oil pan and then it is a cinch. but getting the oil pan off with the engine in the car is tricky. remove all the bolts to oil pan and then the bolts to the engine mounts and transmission mount and jack engine up enough to remove oil pan
My Capri dumps fuel has spark won't start
If it's "dumping" fuel into the engine, the computer has it cold start mode. Stay off the throttle pedal when try to start after a good while to allow fuel to clear. If it won't start then, you've a fuel regulation problem on cold start. But do wait a good while for fuel to clear fron engine, then try to start without touching the throttle. It's meant to be this way.
1993 mercury capri charges then doesn't new
It's best to relate symptoms to narrow things down. I assume you are still getting a dead battery when trying to start even after replacing the alternator and battery.Get a volt meter. Harbor freight sells them ridiculously cheap (about $5). Measure the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running. If it is at least 13.5 volts to 15 volts then the alternator is charging correctly. If it is 12 volts then the alternator is not charging the battery. If the alternator checks out ok, then check for things that could be draining the battery when the car is off. Usual suspect is the trunk light. Put your cell phone on video record into the trunk facing the light, then shut the trunk. If the light stays on, its because the switch in the latch mechanism is faulty. WD40 might make it work, or just pull the bulb. Also, check the glove box light the same way. Good luck...Chris
Window pulley cable is bound up causing the window
Usually the cable gets messed up when it becomes detached from the glass raising mechanism. If the cable is messed up, then new cables are needed, probably a new pulley also, which they don't make anymore. Best bet is buy a used regulator assembly from a junk yard or ebay. Replacing it yourself is a little tedious, but can be done by the do-it-yourselfer. Techcapri.com has manuals to reference for replacement procedure. Good luck, Chris
Engine fan doesnt engage
It's very common for the temperature sensor to go bad on these cars. A quick fix is to pull the connector to the sensor. It is a single wire, the sensor is under the distributor. With the wire pulled, the fan will come on and stay on all the time. This way you won't overheat. Replace the sensor and you've fixed the problem...Chris, owner of 5 of these Australian Capris...
Valve noise on acceleration
If its just a little noise, like one or 2 valves, then you may need a valve job. If its very clattery, then may be oil starving, check oil level. If the oil pressure is low, then there may be crank bearing issues that would be costly to repair...Chris
