Has anyone bothered to scan the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) or the GEM (General Electronic Module) to see if there are any fault codes? Does the engine run OK when this happens? I had a Grand Marquis that was doing something similar and the modules had several U-codes. Finally found the problem in the Transmission Range Sensor - it was shorting out the data line.

The clamp end to battery positive , the point end touch to pin 85 relay socket while cranking ! Test light should light !

The fuel cap has nothing to do with the starting issue, but the fuel pump may.

The electric fan should kick in before overheat. If it's not, then check: electric fan relay to switch electric fan on temperature sender (and temperature sensor, they're different)

It's probably a battery problem. Even if it starts once, it might not start again, so you're still left with the same problem. Either take the battery to be tested, or find someone with a "battery charger/starter" who can hook up and give you enough voltage to boost it to life. Good luck.

There is a linkage between the ignition and the shifter that seems to have disconnected or broke. When you turn the key to the on position it unlocks the shifter in the column, remove the plastic cosmetics around the ignition and you can work the key back and forth and see the rod going up and down. There are multiple speed sensors in the transmission. I assume you're referring to the vehicle speed sensor which is also known as the output shaft speed sensor which is located in the tailshaft housing.

On 4 R70W transmission it is located on the back side of transmission left side.

I can't say 100% on this but some vehicles still use vacuum to operate the blend air doors (electric solenoids or earlier cable to operate the tempature door).
You may have a vacuum issue and defrost would be the default position because you need your winshield clear more than heat on your face or feet.
Start at the intake manifold and follow your vacuum source.
