check ground cable on battery.take a jumper cable connect it to negative and a bracket on engine.see if that works for power issues if so change ground cable.
I'm seeing a lot of 1994 Mazda Protege problems so if you do replace it I would recommend a new trans and not a rebuilt or junk yard trans. Most car repair shops use Jasper Transmissions most likely because they build them better than the original!
Keep it under 65mph!
Go to the nearest auto parts store and ask them to check it with a code reader. Advanced Auto Parts will usually do this for free!
GO HERE. It shows the procedure for changing out the complete alternator, but the belt procedure is in there also. You don't have to remove all the stuff mentioned in the instructions. Just loosen the alternator bolts, disconnect the electrical connector and remove and replace the belt. No big deal. Good luck.
Sorry I did not notice the make, model in the posting when I clicked on your posting.
I had a similar thing happen to me on my F-150 and it turned out to be a failure of a part in the steering column. It cost me about $500 to get it fixed. I'm a retired electronics engineer and I wouldn't even attempt to tackle the steering column.
Hope I'm wrong but suggest you have a shop with a computer check it out and give you a quote.
can you give me the horn wiring diagram for the 1994 mazda protoge. my horn goes off by itself when it get cold. I'm loosing friends in the neighborhood. Help
i'm assuming your meaning the torque convertor lock solenoid... for that you'd have to seperate the motor from tranny and locate it on your stock toque convertor... or may need the whole convertor..
Question edited for clarity, spelling 'Mazda'.
Question moved to sub category.
You have a transmission issue, nothing to do with the engine running. You need a good mechanic with a scanner computer.

This engine uses the standard firing order for a cylinder engine. 1, 3, 4, 2, Where number One is the cylinder nearest the belts and pulleys on the engine.
Usually it is a good idea to replace any of the belts if you have to take them off to do repairs. Belts aren't usually expensive to buy. A timing belt is a major service item on higher mileage engines, (60,000 to 100,000 miles), so replacing it is always worth doing.
P2009 means the intake manifold runner control circuit has excessively low voltage for bank 1.
Inside the Air intake manifold there is a set of butterfly valves that adjust the air flow going into the engine when its running at different speeds. The Manifold Control Runner operates these valves. The ECU, (the cars brain), isn't getting the correct electrical signals from it. The runner control is usually mounted on the intake manifold but where it is will depend on the vehicle manufacturer and the engine you have fitted. Try this youtube video as a starting point. It will give you an idea of where it is and some quick checks you can do to test if it is just sticking in one position. These control units are normally not too expensive to buy
if you needed to replace it.

On the center console next the shifter there should be a small access cover about 1"inch square. remove the cover then press down on the switch and move the gear selector
