How do you take a

I assume you mean a DVD. A DVD would be able to be used to watch the video in DVD Players and other computers. However, burning it to a CD would be usuable to as it would just act as a storage media but wouldn't be able to be played in a standard DVD player. To burn a DVD/CD you must first have a CD/DVD Burner. It is a CD Drive witht he capability to burn CD/DVD. Then you can just use any video burning software, such as Windows Media Player or iMovie (on mac) to burn the video on to your CD/DVD.

Do I need software to get my comp to recognize a

Hello

Depending on which version of windows you are using, you might need to install the drivers for the device.

I know XP and older versions have a mush smaller internal driver database than windows vista or windows 7.

You don't necessarily need to install software to operate the device, just need the driver installed, then your computer will recognize the device.

Hope this can help you.

Kind regards
Andrea

Will not read on my labtop

It is broken. Either replace it, or purchase an external CD/DVD reader/writer, with a USB interface.

Drivers

It doesn't require a driver. The Windows OS will detect/auto-install the drive. Check in My Computer to see if it's listed there.
