if the power steering goes stiff soft stiff soft whe turning would this be steering rack and pinion needs to be replace or bad cv joint change the steering oil pump.. this will help you for gd :)

soft and swollen hoses is from fluid contamination. Perhaps a fluid other than power steering was added to the system. This would also explain the loss of steering assist. Replace the lines and fluid.
