NO! And before you replace the thermocouple, clean the pilot. That may be the problem instead of the thermocouple. Especially if, the pilot flame is curling upward, instead of being straight out. Where it can engulf the tip of the thermocouple. Also, check the thermocouple connection where it enters the gas control valve. If you can loosen it with your fingers, it's too loose. Finger tighten it and with an appropriately sized open end wrench, tighten it only 1/4 turn more.

Hope this helped you troubleshoot and solve the problem, David.

Richmond gas w/htr. light pilot and main burner 15 seconds both flame out...relight pilot..it'll stay on five minutes .flames out..new thermo coupler

Make sure the thermocouple is deep into the blue part of the flame. If it is good, then the only part left is the defective main gas valve.

Coleman evcon furnace

Did you clean the pilot orfice?? It has a very small opening about the size of a hair. You may have to use a needle to open the opening....Are you getting gas to the pilot orfice assembly from the Gas Valve when you set it to Pilot?? If not then check the pilot adjustment screw on top of the gas valve at the pilot tube. CW decreases flow.

The pilot won't stay lit!! Before when this happened, we turned the gas down. It seemed it would blow itself out. Tonight...it doesn't want to light at all.

i should have seen that, sorry.
TDoes it go out when you turn the main control to on? If so, The thermo coupler appears to be not working. The thermo coupler is that bulb that is at the tip of the pilot flame. and has a small tube going to the main valve. It controls all the gas and shuts everything off if the pilot flame goes out, including the gas to the pilo. That is why you have to push the button to light the pilot. Ot bypasses giving the pilot some fuel. to lite. As mebtioned, if the thermocoupler goes bad nothing will work so I think changing it will solve your problem. If the coupler is not in the flame, try adjusting so it is and see if that helps Good Luck -Ned-

No hot water, pilot light lights but no burner ignition

Thermo coupler may be defective. it controls the main gas valve by closing main if pilot is out. make sure thermo coupler bulb is positioned over and near tip of pilot flame, but not in the flame. Thermo couplers are inexpensive and easy to change out.

How do i install a thermal coupler for forced air heater gas

Thermo coupler is held in place with a clamp bracket at the pilot end and a small brass line nut on the other end going into the gas valve. The pilot flame must surround the sensing bu or wrap itself around it Press the pilot button for a few seconds and fire up the pilot flame. Wait a few more minutes and turn the gas vale on for the main burners. If it fires, your set.Good Luck,Ned

Thermo coupler on all the time, push in button, shuts off gas

Bad Safety valve. (valve w/red button). Thermocouple keeps the magnet open to keep pilot and so gas can flow to burner. Make sure pilot is clean and strong and hitting thermocouple. If it doesnt stay lit replace Safety Valve.

Pilot ligt wont stay light

My suggestions,

take the electrical wiring off the terminals of the gas valve one at a time, and clean the contacts with a food grade electronics contact cleaner and degreaser. Make sure all wiring is tight, not loose fitting, and clean. The thermo coupler, or sometimes used thermopile (multiple thermocouples in one) generates a small amount of electrical current when heated. The oil residue on a gas valve's electrical contacts SHORTS OUT THE MINUTE CURRENT GENERATED not giving enough current to hold the valve open.

The next thing, how high is your pilot set? If the flame is not striking the thermo pile properly, if its not directally in the flame, it will not generate enough current to hold the gas valve open. Sometimes a dirty thermo pile just cleaned up with sandpaper will work again (accumulated material acts as an insulator)

If you have access to a very high end electrical meter that is capable of measurung MICRO AMPS (very few) then you should check the actual current ouput of the themo pile.

Another thing, the gas valve solonoid MAY BE DEFECTIVE! IF YOUR THERMO PILE is of the screw in type vrs screwed on type, remove the gas valve end, degrease the inside and also that of the thermo pile surfaces, then use the CLEAN errasser of a pencil to clean both the inside of the gas valve connection, and also that of the thermo pile contacts. NO ERRASSER RESIDUE CAN BE LEFT ON EITHER SURFACE! Do not touch these contact surfaces with your hands because even the resistance of the body oil on these surfaces can mean the differance between it working or not!

The thermo pile or a thermo couple generates a minute amount of current that holds the gas valve on.

PS: and that didn't even cost you a dime, I'm off to an emergewncy service call to fix yet another McDonalds deeping fryer (don't call them beeping fryers cause they beep either!!!)
