The sound for my laptop comes and goes at regular intervals. Current no audio throught my internal speakers or through my external speakers. I can only get audio through my headphones. I have tried everything possible that I know of. SOLVED ( sold it) (edited by tech) you forgot to say bought PC with vista, or XP (right) and upgraded to w10-32 and fails.(sure it will) and this was the problem. were those headphones, USB headphones?
I've had this happen on a 9 year old Dell laptop. The Windows 10 driver want working with the built in sound card. The headphone jack worked fine but speakers wouldn't. Eventually repurposed the computer, but while I needed the speakers I just found the Windows Vista drivers online, installed those and everything worked fine.
NO OS STATED by anyone here , running LINUX?
one poster fessed up to w10, and you caused your pain, doing that.....!!!
yes, in fact the most common cause of dead sound chips, are (drivers wrong or missing)
is upgrading the OS, with no permission from OEM maker. (yes, 99% self caused failures)|
OEM is TOSHIBA.
first off if you asked Toshiba to help (you did not) they will tell you
hard cold fact:
we have no support on W7,w8,w8.1 nor w10 driver for this PC. (is this clear?)
The last driver is VISTA.
(try to run this in compatibility mode of w10)
at Toshiba. , seen below proof.
Realtek HD Audio Driver for Windows Vista
Posted Date: 2015-12-30 | Version: 6.0.1.5343 | Size: 15.18M
https://support.toshiba.com/support/mode...
I read your vista installer package
and it uses this chip, I think (as saw in the Inf files, "deep")
and shows its a ALC861 (but you must check that ,using PCI-z free app)
learn that most PC sold new, even one model can have many sound chip options, offered.
I call that day1.options, some have 5 choices.
so we always scan for chips, first. PCI-z
realteck USA shows nothing, or makes you prove you are an OEM to get the drivers, for w10.
but i do see this site below....
the OLD .TW site is now shut down.
DNS disabled it is.
Taiwan.
Realtek chip maker just shut down the old server. (decades old)http://www.realtek.com.tw
my guess they are in transition to newer servers.?
google bot finds this,,,so is not really dark.
but now is on the dark web (oddly)
(internic records show)
inetnum: 211.75.126.64 - 211.75.126.127
netname: REALTEK-SEMICOND-HC-TW
descr: Taipei Taiwan
country: TW
admin-c: HZ257-TW
tech-c: HZ257-TW
mnt-by: MAINT-TW-TWNIC
they seem to be limiting network traffic.?
due to billions of(w10 upgrades I guess)
http://211.75.126.106/downloads/
if you go to realtek.com
they make you click a link called accept.
click high def. audio
click accept.
it tells you , the driver is not equal to Toshiba (yes, the OEM may add to it)
then you land here on the dark web.
try this driver.
http://211.75.126.106/downloads/download...
I thinks this is safe. to try.,
good luck getting drivers, from Realtek.
the make it very hard to do.
I know why sure, from their perspective.
not one person here said...
headphones USB??? (the USB matters)
or headphones 3.5mm round jack type.
hint the USB phones have there own sound chip.

Doesn't make sense to no have audio on your external speakers as they are connected where you connect your headphones. Unless by a bad coincidence your internal and external speakers are bad. Check the cables.
Make sure you connect them to the correct hole (audio out not microphone).
If nothing works and don't want to pay to have it replaced you can find adaptors that give you sound on ebay/amazon/etc.
not at all NeoX
the posters all of them upgraded from xp or vista to w10,
and the maker toshiba does NOT support W10 at all (Rimshot to drum head)
only vista (max) fact.
ok?>
There are like 1 billion folks sucking in to w10 upgrades (and for free more)
all with DEAD chips, sound, ethernet or wifi
and worse , you have PC with olded Intel
HD grapic chip, no w10 driver exists in the world, making w10 DOA from get go.
(intel.com is clear on this ) but off topic.
not magic or anything like it
but yes your cure does work,, called a sound dongle., including even DAC sound, like I have.
on desktops you can buy a new, PCI-express sound card, so there is an upgrade path in all cases. fact.

SOURCE: Toshiba Notebook L315 Headphone Jack Problems
the sound socket on the motherboard was nearly damaged, the only way can fix it is replaced the socket on motherboard by componnet level technician, otherwise you have to use USB port to sound out...
SOURCE: Toshiba A10 headphone jack problem
I think you are on the right track, if the headphone jack is worn and shorting out itll kill the speakers because it thinks headphones are plgged in, ebay would be a good start for parts, maybe even call toshiba and speak to their tech support.
SOURCE: Disabled Satellite A215 internal speakers and now can't enable!
you may want to try and reinstall the driver from the manufacturers website. I had to do that with a brand new notebook as the speakers didn't work when first turned on. I'll see if I can locate a link and post again if I find it.
SOURCE: No headphone sound, but internal speaker works fine.
Hello,
Hello,
It is because that your internal speaker is the default play back device other than your head phone or external speaker.
Need to go to your sound setting.
Depend on your operating system, click Start, then click Control panel, then click Hardware and Sound, click Sound.
Under Playback tab, select your external speaker or head phones as default device.
