Any of the two will work it all depends on preference. If the modem or router is too far from the console then you would most likely want to go wireless. Here are instructions how to do each:
WIRELESS (WIFI):
Step 1: Turn on the PS3
Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings"
Step 3: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes".
Step4: Select "Easy" on types of installation.
Step 5: Select "Wireless" to choose what kind of internet connection you want.
Step 6: Select "Scan" to search for internet access points.
Step 7: Select your home connection when the screen comes up with all the found access points. If your home Internet access point requires a password enter the password when prompted and save your settings.
Step 8: Test the connection to check if you configured your settings right if successful you are good to go. If not go back and check your connection settings for your home internet access point. You are now connected to the internet!
HARDLINE (Wired): Must connect ethernet cable to PS3 before turning it on!
Goes like this: Arrows are the cable (===>)
Internet Line ===>Router ===>PS3
Step 1: Turn on the PS3
Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings"
Step 3: Go to "Internet Connection" and select it to Enable it.
Step 4: Select "Internet Connection Settings"
Step 5: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes".
Step 6: Select "Easy" on types of installation.
Step 7: PS3 will automatically check your connection network setup and set the settings for you.
Step 8: The settings will appear and press x to save the settings.
Step 9: Test your connection if it was successful you will see succeeded nest to "Obtain IPAddress" and "Internet Connection" you are now connected to the internet!

Internet cable connected to the ps3 [problem connect an ethernet cable] wifi works fine.

Generally on these in order to use the hardline connection you will need to go back through the internet setup option within the bios. You can access this under the options menu. Once you are there select wired connection and all should be well.

(ps3) How to change Nat type 3. I found a guide online it was to complicated.

Nat 3 means that your PS3 is having problems accessing the internet connection. The best way to resolve this is to not play online using wifi just connect your PS3 directly into your router via an Ethernet cable. If this doesn't work call your internet provider and they will be more than glad to fix your problem.

I cant play online without the modem being by my ps3?

Yes, using a longer ethernet cord will work, but the PS3 has a bult-in WiFi card that can connect to any wireless router (you can buy a wireless router from a computer store like BestBuy).

If you are going to buy a wireless router, see if a wireless G-mimo or wireless N with signal boost is within your budget. Try looking through the network settings to see if you can connect through the wireless router.

Or just get a longer ethernet cord and run it directly to the PS3 from the router. Ethernet cords are the most reliable connection, granted you are on a good internet connection, they won't get interference from things like mobile phones, cordless phones, microwaves, TV's etc.

I have both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and the only thing I like better about the PS3 is the free online game play and Blue-Ray. Other than that, they're even. Good luck and have fun online! If you find me (wraith0127) say hi! Don't forget to rate. Thank you!

EA SERVER

I need some info about your internet connection, First are you using wifi or are you plugged into the modem. If you're using wifi do you have any cordless phones in your house or apt. Apartment would be worse in this case because someone might have a phone that interferes with your wifi connection.I believe the PS3 wifi is disrupted by phones 5.8hz and lower. So you could be playing a game a phone call comes in and someone picks up the phone guess what you're going to get disconnected. If you're wired up to the modem then either your ISP or the EA server is experiencing problems.

PS-III Rock Band - Internet Load While Gaming

Yes, the problem is with the PS3.
When using the PS3, if possible, disconnect any computers and devices (PDA's, PSP's, Phones, etc) that are using the internet both Wireless and Wired.

This should minimize the connections being used.
Another tip is disabling the PS3's Network connection when NOT using the Online features of the PS3. The Ps3 does not have to be connected so that it could be played offline.

PS3 Internet Connection/Upgrade System/Online Play

Do an internet connection test. Your NAT type should be either 1 or 2. If not then there are some restricted ports on your router.

I find that putting your PS3 in your router's DMZ (demilitarized zone), solves all connection problems.
