You need to connect the printer to your laptop and install the printer driver. If you do not have the printer driver installation CD then you can download the printer driver from the printer manufacturer's WEB site. I cannot give you the link to the printer manufacturer's WEB site because you did not provide me with the make and model of your printer.
When you mean down install, do you mean uninstall or install. If install, try going to the printer company's web site and search for your printer. They should have the drivers for the printer on their website. If not, try a search engine and type the name of the printer. It should look like this, Drivers for HP w1907 printer. Be careful on what web sites you get the drivers from.
Someone else on this site posted a solution for another Lexmark (I could not get it to scan - even with Lexmark's technical solution chat/help). While waiting for the guy to respond to my question, I googled the issue and came to this site. The link to the direct answer posted on this site is: http://www.fixya.com/support/t184784-scanning_printer
I did exactly what was written - I unplugged the printer, uninstalled the driver, went to Lexmark's site, installed the driver from there and, miraculously, I was finally able to scan. Perhaps this will work for you as well. If it helps I have Windows Vista.
