Sometimes the thermostat wire (not sure of the technical name) gets oxidized and can't sense the heat (it's there as a safety measure so that when the pilot light goes out, the gas shuts off). If it isn't to hard to get to, sometimes you can use some aluminum foil to clean the wire so that it senses the heat of the pilot light flame. Make sure the main unit is off, and let the unit sit for awhile to make sure there is no residual gas hanging around. If this doesn't work, you might have to get a specialist out to replace that piece. Hope this helps.
