I have a Hall MMF 2.1 Turntable with Goldring Elan Moving Magnet (MM) Cartridge I just recently noticed a static sound from the stylus after recording just a few songs. I also use LAST Products. LAST Stylus Cleaner & Treatment seem to help for a while. Any suggestions? Stylus replacement? Thanks, Bill

The device that I use for this is https://www.ebay.com/itm/Zerostat-3-Anti-Static-Instrument-Gun-Record-Vinyl-LP-Care-Cleaning-Discwasher/162827949349?hash=item25e94d5525:g:GzAAAOSwHYpaR6Eu

The problem can be related to a lot of things like the quality of the vinyl etc. One thing you can try is raising the humidity in the room.

SOURCE: No Volume For My Music Hall MMF-5 Turtable

Cambridge amps do not come fitted with the OPTIONAL phono preamp. At present you are plugging it into the AUX option hence why you get no/quiet rubbish sound. You can buy an external one or purchase the correct cambridge one to fit internally.

JVC l-A31 turntable volume not very loud, is connected to a amp with phono inputs, wires are connected to the cartridge...

Hello Charles.

Maybe you use the wrong pickup system.
Normal Phono inputs are just for MM-Systems.
MC-System needs other Pre-Amp.
Some newer Amps have a switch (mostly near the Phono inp.) to select MM- or MC- system. (MM means Moving Magnet-Sys. and MC is Moving Coil-Sys)

Music hall mmf 2 not working with pre amp

The pre-amp has failed. Since you can hear the signal with the deck plugged into the amp that proves the cartridge and deck are working.

How can i use a pioneer PL-Z93 turntable with a pioneer A-717 amp?

Hi, there is no reason for the turntable not to work with your amp. This amp has 2 phono inputs. Moving magnet and moving coil. Your tt likely has a moving magnet cartridge fitted so connect via that input. Cheers John. styluscity.com

I'm trying to figure out what type of cartridge the ATP-2 is which came with my Audio Technica AT-PL120 Turntable. Is it "Moving Magnet" or "Moving Coil" or something else?

These are the specs for your cartridge - it is of the moving magnet variety. Vector-Aligned Dual Magnet design and A-T's exclusive Paratoroidal signal generator. This unique signal-generating system is composed of a unified, laminated coil core wound with a single piece of wire. Internal mechanical and electrical connections are eliminated, minimizing magnetic losses and assuring better signal transfer. PCOCC wire

Cartridge Specifications (ATP-2)

Frequency Response 15-22,000 Hz

Channel Separation 23/17 (dB at 1 kHz/10 kHz)

Vertical Tracking Force 3.0 - 5.0 grams

Stylus Construction Bonded round shank

Output 5.3 mV at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec

Channel Balance 1.5 dB

Stylus Shape 0.4 x 0.7 mil elliptical
Cantilever Alloy tube

Doe's the P-490 have a MM or Mc cartridge?

you can use either on your turntable provided your amplifier has a moving coil facility? if not your limited to moving magnet type? the moving coils are more expensive and generally better quality, but saying that some moving magnet type cartridges can cost over£100 so, unless you have a high end expensive hi fi i would go for the moving magnet?

Very low volume from my technics sl6 even when tuner is turn up to max. volume.

Hiya, first and foremost, is it plugged into the amps correct sockets? Turnatables have to in the PHONO (turntable) Any others , CD, AUX, MIC etc will not work. (sorry if that seems obvious, wasnt sure on the info provided)

If that is OK then check the stylus, probably requires a new stylus or/and cartridge.

Best of luck

WEAK SOUND WHEN CONNECTED TO DURABRAND AMP

The electrical output from a turntable actually comes from the cartridge on the tone arm. Specifically, it's generated by an interaction between a magnet and a coil inside the cartridge. They come in two types, MC ("moving coil") and MM ("moving magnet") according to which of the two elements moves and which is fixed. MM cartridges produce more current but MC cartridges usually sound better. No matter which you have though, the total output is too low for the regular line inputs on amplifiers. Ten or twenty years ago, amps has special "phono" inputs. This would have a special pre-amplifier in it that would amplify the cartridge's singal to a level suitable for the rest of the amp. Most amps having a phono input only deal with MM cartridges, which have a higher signal.

I use an MC cartridge with an amp that doesn't have a phono input at all; therefore I needed to buy a special external phono pre-amp. I bought a Musical Fidelity X-LPS. But cheaper pre-amps do exist.

No Volume For My Music Hall MMF-5 Turtable

You will need to obtain a phono preamp to connect between the deck and the amplifier. I do not think this turntable is fitted with its own preamp - check the User Guide.

Phono input

If you mean Moving Magnet vs Moving Coil, they are different.

MM is the higher output of the two types so most Phono Preamps can deal with them.

Not knowing the specific receiver model, a direct answer to your second query is not possible. I would guess - YES.

"Since the coils are much smaller than those in the MM cartridge, the MC cartridge generates a much smaller signal."

see this great article where that originates...
