You should not have to pull out the crown to wind the watch.

You usually wind up watches with the crown in the home position (i.e. pushed against the body).

"Self-winding" Automatic mechanical watches that don't run.

Many questions are posted about watches that don't run or just run for a few seconds or minutes. If it's a quartz/digital watch you need to have the battery replaced. If it's a mechanical watch - even a high end "perpetual" watch like a Rolex, you'll need to manually wind it. Self-winding, or automatic, watches have a rotor in the case that spins as your arm/wrist moves throughout the day. The motion of the rotor winds the watch. When the watch is left unworn for a day or you spend your day just reading a book or otherwise remain inactive, the watch runs down. To restart it and provide a power reserve, simply wind the watch manually by turning the crown clockwise about 40 turns. It should run fine as long as you stay active. If you don't wear the watch everyday and don't want to have to wind and reset it every time you put it on, you can buy a watch winder to keep it moving. You can find them for under $100 on ebay for basic models and for more money you will see ones that wind multiple watches and have nice decorative cases.

Open the watch case. Find the small hole or tiny piece of metal with the pointed groove next to the winding stem and push it with a needle or pointed tweezers. Pull out winding crown while still pushing.

I have a new, purchased ar an auction so no paperwork a Cartier pasha woman's wristwatch. I don't know how to wind it. Please tell me

There are several models of this watch and you don't say which one you have but thi range are either automatic (which means that it is self winding) or quartz (battery driven).

If it is not going it could be
(1) (for a quartz watch) the winder has been pulled out (push it back in) or the battery has expired. (Do you know how old the watch is?).

(2) If the watch says "automatic" on the face, then it haas probably just run down (they run for 2-3 days if they are not used). If this is the case, holding the watch horizontally, swing it gently from side it side for a few minutes (this will operate the self winding mechanism) and the watch should then start. To keep an autimatic watch operating it needs to be worn daily or placed on a winder when not in use.

I have a Croton watch. It is a automatic.I can't get it to run.I was informed that the watch had to be wound. The crown{stem} has four settings.I shak it and it runs for about 15 seconds

In the first position (closest to the case but not screwed down if it's a screwdown crown) wind the crown clockwise about 40 turns and it should run fine. The automatic winding system relies on wrist movement to spin a weighted rotor that winds the watch. When you're not wearing the watch or not moving much when you do have it on, it will run down and you have to manually wind it to get it going again. If you wear it everyday and are reasonably active you may never have to wind it but take it off for a day and you will.

2003 deer pocket watch Al Agnew is it wind up or Battery

Often with battery powered watches the word "Quartz" will be written on the dial. In the abscent of that you can look at the mechanism inside (typically by removing the case back).

Alternately (this may not be an absolute confirmation) with the winder in neutral position i.e. pressed all the way in, turn the crown (winding button) and if it spins freely it's probably quartz. Because unless it's broken most mechanical watches click as the watch is
wound up (except some automatics which cant be crown wound).

Plus if it's working and left unworn for a few days yet continues to run it's probably quartz.

Can't get my croton watch to work.

There are a few possible reasons why your watch is not working:
  1. The battery is dead (sometimes even new watches have a dead battery in them).
  2. The plastic piece between the crown and the watch case was not removed (this protects the battery from wearing down until you receive the watch).
  3. You bought a watch with a damaged movement and it just will not work period so you may have to return it, exchange it, or have it repaired
These are the 3 reasons why your watch could not be working. The reason will fall into one of these 3 categories, so I hope this helps!
