My whirlpool 50 gal natural gas water heater wont stay lit?

Are you sure the pilot is heating up the thermocouple? Make sure the flame is close enough to the thermocouple. Also make sure the thermocouple is seated properly in control valve. Try unscrewing and resetting it back into place.

I installed a now 40 gal. electric water heater, made by Reliance, problem: I have power going to the top thermostat and element, but there is no power going to the bottom element.please help, thanks Mike...

How they work. First you need to know that cold water goes into the tank near the bottom (because of the "dip tube" inside the tank) and hot water is taken out at the top. Also hot water naturally rises.
so... when the tank is full of cold water the top element will come on and heat up the top 1/3 of the water then the bottom element will come on and finish heating the rest of the tank.

Caluclation

This requires a little math....

BTU - amount of heat it takes to raise one pound of water 1 degree F.

I gallon of water = about 8.54 pounds

91 gallons of water = about 777 pounds = 777 pounds x 70 degree rise = 54,390 BTU.

1 Therm (what the gas company measuers in) is 100,000 btus

1 therm costs about $.45 (45 cents) depending on where you are

54,390/100,000 x $.45 = about $.25 per hour

This cost can vary somewhat depending on the inlet water temperature, gas cost, and the efficiency of the hot water heater
