This can be a firmware problem , did you check the firmware of your friends WII, so make sure that you have the same firmware if not update your WII's firmware...
Hope that helps........
This generally happens because there is a flash RAM in some models and the update is not applied properly.
The immediate thing we can do in this kind of problem is that just shut down the system, wait for 20 seconds and reboot it. This should resolve the issue if your system has an interim issue.
If you still continue to have the problem we need to reformat it. As per the research regarding wii freezing, majority of the issues get resolved when we reformat it.
Well if you still have the problem again call up the customer support and get your system replaced.

Two possible problems: Disk scratched or overheating. The one major flaw in the wii is the standby mode, if you keep it like that for a while (a day to a week, whatever) it overheats because there is no fan for it on standby. Try unplug it and it may be fine.
There are many reports about similar issues. Most of the time overheating is the issue especially during high level of processor run. You may unplug the unit and replug after 30 minutes or more. There are actually many ways to resolve the issue. However I am concern that some solution methods might void the warranty. Try using after cool down the unit. If issue persist You can take it directly to the reseller as you can request exchange or firmware update.
Good Luck
Greetings,
