Yamaha HTR-5990 Receiver Logo

I just got a Yamaha HTR6063 receiver and when I put the headphones in, it cuts off sound to the speakers. Is there a way to have sound in both the speakers and the headphones? The reason for this is that I am hard of hearing but my wife isn't so she likes the tv to low for me to hear so I used headphones so I could turn it up so I could hear also. That was when it was just the TV but now with the receiver, the tv doesn't have sound in it's headphone output and the receiver doesn't seem to be able to have both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't there a way to pass the sound to the tv as well as the speakers?

  • Anonymous Dec 12, 2010

I do not know how to wire up diodes and jacks. In the meantime, I contacted Yamaha and they wrote back with a solution. There is a setting in the audio output menu that I just had to turn on and the sound now goes to both the receiver and the tv and from the tv, I can use my headphones. Now I can turn the headphones up to where I can hear and my wife can turn the receiver down to where she is comfortable so all is well...

    Thanks for your response though.

    Merry Christmas

Since there is no option from the menu that could give you audio both on speakers and headphones, there is one solution with some external connections but you must be able to buy and connect 2 resistors and headphone jack. The cost for these parts won't be much. Are you able to get these at your area? Also are you able to use soldering tool?
Sorry for the questions but I can't suggest you something that can't make it. In case you can locate things like these at your area, post me back to give you further details and parts details also.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
If you are satisfied, accept my solution.

This is the best solution, I thought you already have tried this and there was no option at the menu. Anyway I'm glad you have solved your problem.

Best wishes for Christmas and New Year's eve.

The switch between the speakers and the headphones is controlled by a small mechanical switch from the headphones socket. To have them both active all you need to do is to open the receiver and rewire the socket, bypassing the switch - an easy 15 minute job if you know what you're doing. But you need some experience in electronics to do it so it will be better for you to take it to your local repair shop - they shouldn't be asking you more than $75 for that.

How can I connect Senheiser wireless headphone to Yamaha RX773 without using front headphone jack as this mutes speakers, I have hearing problems, my wife doesn't, I tried both av audio outs in the back...

Your receiver has Zone-2 functionality. For Zone-2, it has both speaker (powered) output and pre-out line outputs. According to Yamaha FAQ, these pre-out outputs are independent on the main volume settings. So if your wireless headphones have their own volume settings, you can change the volume independent on speakers volume.

If you want same volume for speakers and headpohones, use the PRE-OUT FRONT outputs on the back. If you want different volumes (and listen to headphones even with speakers muted), use ZONE-2 OUT outputs on the back.

Can you hear sound via the headphone socket? If you cannot then the main amp has failed. If you can hear the sound, then the headphone socket could be faulty.

Stereo receiver: headphones work but speakers don't

This could be either a fault on the headphone socket itself, or on a speaker switch. It depends on how the insertion of the jack plug into the socket affected the sound before the fault. If for example the sound was cut off from the speakers, then it's likely the fault is the socket itself.
On the other hand if you have to press a button to switch the speakers off the fault will be connected with the that button.

Your system is designed to interrupt the signal flow once headphones are attached. It can not be changed without internal modifications. There is no control to do this.

Try getting into the configuration menu of the MP3 player and adjust the output controls for external devices....it sounds to me like it might be too high and/or the wrong output decoding.
