Acer Aspire 3680

The computer problem first started showing that the battery was not charging when it was plugged. Now, the laptop won't even power up with the power cord.

Having a similiar problem with the Acer aspire..it won't power up. Does this brand need a battery in it to power it on?? I have a Sony Viao and it works even if the battery is not in it...Does Acer work that way or do you have to have the battery in for it to power on..and if the battery is dead...will it not power up??

I cannot tell you the exact reason why but I can tell you what I did to fix it. It was not any of the above. I deal with laptops all the time and I knew this one had a good charger. I even tried several. I happened to notice that sometimes it would charge with one brand charger and sometimes another but I finally found one that always worked. The reason it worked was that it put out a constant 20VDC @ 6.0A instead of the normal 19VDC @ 2.0A that is supplied by most chargers. I am not going to "advise" anyone else to try this but if you buy a new charger you will most likely see that instead of the normal 19VDC it will have a "spread" of 19V to 23V or so. Any of these chargers will probably work not because yours was "bad". I tested several with voltmeters that all said 19V but they all worked erratically sometimes yes, sometimes no. In my opinion, there is either a design flaw or bad component in the on-board charging circuit. It will ONLY allow power to come in when certain conditions are met and apparently when it gets a bit "off" it will only work with an input that is greater than what is normally needed. Bottom line, if you get a replacement charger, I advise you get one that will; supply more than the minimum of 19VDC as required by the original. It would be interesting to know if anyone else has checked their old power supply to see if it was actually good.

This has happened to my laptop too. It turned out to be the AC adapter/power cord. If you have a computer repair store near you you can take the cord and they might repair it for you. Also to make sure that it is power cord the computer repair shop can test it to make sure it is working correctly. It costs me less than $20 to get it fixed. If not you may have to order a new power cord.

Check to make sure that the adapter (where it plugs into the back of your computer) is not loose. I know that I just had to replace mine due to the saudering coming loose. If when you plut it in and you can move it around and there is play to it, then you need to have the "charging port" replaced with a new one. Usally this means taking it into a computer service to have them take apart the lap top and fit a new one.

Battery won't charge

does it show that it is connected to the power source? the plug? if it is then, clean the terminals to the battery and the computer. make sure computer is off and disconnected from power source. if that still doesn't fix it then it is something with the connector in the computer.

Says plugged in not charging

Take out the battery and make sure you can turn on the laptop with just the AC Adaptor hooked up.

If you can then you know the AC Adaptor is good. Try another known good working battery in the laptop, if the battery charges then you know that the old battery is bad.

If the laptop doesn't charge with a know working battery or a new one then you know that the motherboard is bad.

My acer 3680 laptop will not power up with or with out battery/plugged ito power. Used 1 day and would not turn on the next, laptop has not even done 20 hours work over a period of time. very disapointed...

Do you get a power light when its plugged in? If not its likely the power adapter is bad and thats why it doesn't work on battery...never got charged.

Laptop turns off when power cable is taken out even though battery is 100% charged

Hi,
sounds like the system has a problem taking power from the battery, but is able to send power to it for charging purposes, or the battery indicates a ful charge, when in reality it is bad.
If there's a way to borrow a known good battery for testing purposes, you might narrow it down.
I'm sorry, I'd need to see this one to offer any further advice.
Good luck
