I have a GE Profile Spacemaker model JVM1660SB005, maufactured in November 2000. I attempted to change a burned out bulb on the left side. I did not check the manual to see how to remove the bulb, nor did I unplug the power cord...you can see where this is going. As I removed the bulb, obviously not in the proper manner, the bulb popped and the vent fan kicked on. I had to unplug the power cord to stop the fan. Plugged it back in, fan not on anymore, clock still works, but micro does not cook. Time cook allows me to set time for cooking as well as express cook time, but turntable doesn't turn, micro doesn't cook(doesn't make any noise either), the time just counts down. The second underneath light does not light up anymore, vent fan is continuously on high when pressed(low or high) and doesn't shut off unless power is removed from wall. I unplugged the wall power for 30 seconds and reset the clock(date and time) but micro still doesn't cook. Any advise (inexpensive would be best) is greatly appreciated as a new micro per my wife isn't in the budget right now. Thanks- dad

I regularly see (and repair) this light and / or fan failure on model JVM1660SB005 and most any model of over the range microwave.
The problem is on the controller assembly, which I regularly repair very affordably.

At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

SOURCE: Microwave shuts off after a few seconds

We have had the same problem described here. We added a heave ceramic pie plate to the turn talbe and it now works 90% of the time. Without it almost never. The problem in one of its incarnations is clearly connected to the turntable.

SOURCE: Microwave Oven Does Not Start Cooking

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

If yours is not shown at the parts site or manual site linked above, Please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases in about a week or so.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

If the mount is broken, it's usually more economical and safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

Bulb on ge microwave keeps burning out

Hi anything is possible being that you even replaced two different brands of bulbs. I don't think the wiring harness is the problem but like I said anything could be the problem. Might I make a suggestion. Why not replace both the left and right side bulbs with LED bulbs with the same base configuration. Maybe that just might be able to solve your problem. I would like to know if it does. It also seems that a lot of others are having the exact problem. Good luck.

You could try the potato trick. Take a small to medium potato. Cut off an end of the potato. Press the cut end into the broken lightbulb and unscrew the rest of the bulb out.

One surface light bulb on GE Profile microwave keeps burning out

I have the same problem. The left one burns out within a couple of hours use, the other one lasts a couple of months and is then gone. This pattern has repeated over 8 years. I replace them every now and then and then just go without until I get the urge again to fix it. Maybe smaller lower wattage lamps are worth trying...
