Black screen, lens won't retract...need help troubleshooting?!

I just bought my camera and started using it, everything was working fine and then suddenly the screen went black and the lens wont retract. When I push the on/off button it sounds as if it is trying to retract, there is a short grinding like noise and 3-4 beeps. When it is placed on the charger the red light does appear. I am not sure what to do, if I should take it back or if maybe it is just a battery issue, please help. Thank you!!

I have the same problem. I read suggestions on one forum to push the lens with your palm to force it to close - a couple of people tried and the camera apparently started working after that. But when I did the same the lens just got pushed in a bit but is still stuck. I would appreciate any other advice... My warranty has expired!

I got my lens to retract properly but now it wont come out again.
The battery reads a full charge but every time i try to power the camera on it just flashes on the green power light for a second or 2 and then thats it.
I put it back on its cradle and the light is red for about 10 seconds then goes green and states a full charge.
I can operate the menus and photo browser as long as the camera is on the cradle but if i take it of the cradle nothing works at all???????
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You need to send your camera in. This is something that can't be fixed at home. Call repairs at 800-706-2534 option 2 and they can tell you where to send it.

Canon power shot SD1200 IS elpf won't retract

This is a delicate operation but you can try this: tap the camera lens up on a towel over a hard surface (counter top or floor) while you expect the lens to retract as in turning off. It may be enough jarring force to get cams back in the helix that moved the lens. Hit it hard and flat. IF that doesnt work, try tapping the lens down while it tries to retract. I have heard that people get so frustrated with it that they slam the camera lens up on a desk and that fixes it!

Nikon coolpix s8100 lens error lens won't retract

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them.

Hi I slipped in the garage and dropped the camera when it was on==batteries came out and lens of course didn't fully retract. Put batteries back in and the green light comes on and beeps but won't...

Sorry about your moms camera Terry... but it sounds like it needs the lens replaced. If the lens is stuck out at an angle you can *SNAP* the inner lens section back into place if you're lucky, and it will work again like normal.

I don't know your model, but a refurb lens can usually be installed for about $75 including return shipping. You should check the replacement cost of a used camera and see which is cheaper in the long run.

Hope this helps!

Lens error. lens is currently retracted. will not open. nikon s8100 bought xmas 2010.

Had issue with lens stuck and not retracting on nikon s8100. first removed battery. then manually (gently) rotated lens counterclockwise until lens seated in fully retracted position. inserted battery, turned camera on and camera operational again. I suspect that root cause of lens jamming was turning off camera while simultaneously moving zoom lever

I had the E18 error--lens wouldn't retract and

Focus problems are quite common after a lens error, it sounds like you still have an issue with that lens unit. If you need help, there's a great site taht just specializes in the powershot problems, nothing else at all. Try going to www.camerasandparts.com and you'll see the fix for this for your SD890 camera. I hope that helps, that site is amazing for the powershots and that's where a lot of people go for help with these. Good luck with it.

Lens & screen show black instead of item to be shot.

You need to go into the menu function to turn the screen on (this feature saves the batterys)

Kodak Z1285 Won't Turn On?

HAd exactly the same issue! You turn on the camera, lense comes out then the screen goes black (turns off)
The blue light stays on and the only way to get it to turn off is to take out the batteries.

Next time you turn on the device, the blue light comes on and the green led flashes, sometimes it powers down and other times the blue light stays on but you have no screen still. The lense stays out.

I tried the "tap" it approach and it now works fine! My suggestion has always been, if it don't work, kick it!! why didn't I try this with this camera firstly instead of trying all sorts of different button combinations to see if there was some sort of hard reset for it?

Thanks for the advice everyone and happy snapping!! :)

Lens will not retract

I had exactly the same problem and I went to this site and got my solution. I banged the bottom of the camera with my palm and turned it off and on at the same time. On about the fourth bang the lens retracted and cleared the error codes. I know, "Caveman Maintenence" but it worked. Can't hurt to try...

"lens error" on casio ex-z3

Sorry to say but a lens error actually is a problem that you cannot fix at home. When a lens error occurs, the motors inside that make the lens retract and protract were some how damaged, usually caused if the lens try coming out when you have it in your pocket or against a surface so it cant fully come out. You will have to send the camera in for service and you can do that by calling 1-800-706-2534, option 1.
