Hi - Here is a description of a few terms that might help, especially if you're in the market for a tv. If this answers your question PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be glad to assist you further. Thanks.

High definition television is the highest form of digital television. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the same as a movie theater screen. This is possibly HD’s biggest selling point. The other is the resolution. High definition is the best available picture on a television. It comes in three different flavors: 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
What do 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?
High definition programs are encoded with a type of resolution: 720p, 1080i or 1080p. The number stands for the amount of lines embedded within the signal. The letter describes the type of scan the television uses to display the picture. The ‘i’ means interlaced and the ‘p’ means progressive.
Why does the amount of lines matter?
The number of lines on a television is important because it allows for greater detail in the image. This is a similar concept to digital photos and how dpi determines print quality. The type of televisions all of us grew up watching had 480 visible lines on the screen. By doubling the amount of lines in combination with the type of scan, HD essentially doubles the quality of picture.
Does it matter if the resolution is interlaced or progressive?
The type of scan is arguable considering the amount of lines for each HD format. Progressive scan is a better type of scan because it doubles the amount of times the TV displays the image per one second in comparison to interlaced. Still, the difference between 720p and 1080i is so minimal that is isn’t an issue at all. While 1080p is better than 720p and 1080i, very few programs are made in this resolution so it really isn’t a factor right now…and, it might never be.

How do I change resolution from 720 to 1080

Hi, You don't change it. Your t.v. will play at 1080p if it is a native 1080p t.v. and it is receiving a 1080p signal. If it is receiving a 720p signal. Then it will play at 720p. If your t.v. is native 720p and receives a 1080 signal. It will scale down the signal to 720p.

How I get a 1080p display. I only get 720p

You need to have a 1080p source. Most TV channels broadcast in 720p. Otherwise, a bluray player hooked up via HDMI will give you 1080p. The TV will switch to the correct resolution automatically.

How to change my display setting from 720p to 1080p

The resolution is dictated by the video source, if it is fed with 720p, you will get 720p res, feed it with 1080p will display 1080p, just like your PC monitor which is controlled by your PC video card resolution setting, not at the monitor.

1080P video via HDMI generates awful interference

Your Plasma's native resolution is 720P. Go into the Blu Ray's output setup. you can choose 480p 480i 720p 1080i and 1080p. Set it for 720p that should clear up the issue. You may have to run Component directly to the TV since you only have 1 HDMI input and you can run Digital coax or optical to your AV receiver for audio. On a 50" TV the difference between 720p and 1080p using "GOOD" cables cannot be seen by the human eye. Above 50, yes it is noticeable.
Hope this helps.

How to get 1080 resolution from my plasmaI have the 6842 pe EDTV

DVDs are 480p
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD is 720p or 1080i or 1080p

you cannot increase resolution, if you want to play a 480p/i video on a 1080p/i or 720p screen, you are merely stretching the picture.

If there is any kind of box that tells you it can convert 480i/p to 1080p/i or 720p(high definition) it is simply stretching the picture.

you can convert 1080p/i or 720p(high definition) to 480i/p as you are taking out information from the video to make it smaller.
