Works - but the sound has changed

The noise our microwave makes has recently changed significantly. There was no power outage that we are aware of. I'll try to describe it...

Before, when we started the microwave, there would be a low pitched "hum" for 1-2 seconds and then a higher pitched "buzz" would be constant until the time expired or the door was opened. It might have been a fan type of sound...but I'm not sure.

Now, there is nothing but the low pitched "hum." It still heats food like it always has. The Vent fan still works when we turn it on high/low/off. It doesn't seem like anything is broken...it just isn't "buzzing" anymore.

Can you help?

Possibly, the "fault" was the buzzing in the first place! Buzzing is usually a cabinet vibration caused by magnetic fields from the "gubbins". If the buzzing should occur again, try pushing/ pulling/ poking the cabinet while the oven is running, you may find a position that causes the buzz to stop.
Another possibility is you previously had something else placed in close proximity to the oven.
If a rattling cabinet is the problem, either try to reposition something, or just ignore it!

The only cause of clunking I can think of is the turntable motor not engaging the drive spindle of the platter properly. Remove the platter and see if the noise goes away.

How do I get rid of the noise?

Hello, Sarkis -

I found 4 descriptions of what may be causing the noise when you operate your microwave oven. See the information on all 4 possible causes here:
https://www.repairclinic.com/RepairHelp/How-To-Fix-A-Microwave/78-88--/Tappan-Microwave-is-loud-or-noisy

Note: Safety advice I have read regarding microwave oven repair is to have a microwave oven repaired only by an authorized repair technician. It is not do-it-yourself work.

Any repair might not be worth the cost compared to purchasing a new replacement. A microwave repair technician authorized to work on Tappan microwave ovens will be able to evaluate what is causing the loud noise and give you an estimate of the repair costs.

Note: If you find you need to replace your microwave oven, please be sure the old microwave oven is sent to electronics recycling.

Best wishes.

My microwave is making a loud buzzing sound. Inside the microwave, on the upper right side, is a square area with holes in it. It sounds like the buzzing is coming from behind those holes. Also, after...

THe buzzing noise is most likely coming from the magneton. The magnetron is the main component of the unit (it generates the microwaves). Replaceing it can be very expensive. You may be better off getting a new oven. Prices for new microwave ovens have dropped significantly.
