Hi
Listen for a Dial Tone
Static is a condition that may be caused by a variety of different conditions. If static is occurring on only one telephone, first test the telephone jack by plugging a working telephone into that jack; if the static goes away, replace the broken phone unit. If you subscribe to digital subscriber line (DSL) high-speed data service, verify that a working DSL filter is installed on the telephone. If a working telephone is present and any necessary DSL filters are in place but the static does not disappear, professional service may be required on the telephone jack where the static is heard. If static is heard on all telephones in the home, verify that the network interface device (NID) located just outside the home is secure and dry, as water inside the NID is a common cause of static on home telephones. If the NID is both dry and secure, or if a telephone plugged into the NID also produces static, call your local telephone company for service.
Listen for CrosstalkCrosstalk is a semi-rare telephone condition in which one party on a private line can hear -- and sometimes be heard by -- another private telephone subscriber. Crosstalk conditions almost always require telephone company intervention, as the cause is generally found either in the telephone network wiring or in the telephone company's central office (CO). If you are unable to call your telephone company for service because of the crosstalk condition, you may be able to reach it by dialing 6-1-1 from any public telephone.
Look for Other Complex ProblemsWhile the three problems described above are far and away the most common trouble complaints experienced by home telephone users, other -- generally more complex -- issues do occur from time to time. Some of these conditions may be serious such as the inability to place or receive calls (this situation is caused by a faulty line card in the telephone company's switch). Other conditions such as improperly functioning voice mail service or a forgotten voice mail password may require only a short phone call to the telephone company's voice mail help desk for resolution. Finally, the inability to dial certain numbers -- toll and/or international numbers, for instance -- may be because the toll services have been intentionally blocked by the telephone company and may require an additional deposit to restore service.
If you continue to experience telephone problems, or if your problem is somewhat more esoteric, do not hesitate to contact your local telephone company's repair department for service. The telephone company is responsible for repair and maintenance of the telephone network up to the network interface device (NID) on the outside of your home, so any repair activity conducted on that portion of the telephone network should not incur a charge.
