The "Add/Remove" button in the control panel does not open. It will not work, yet all other icons in the control panel work fine. Any solutions?

Hi,

1) I am assuming that you are referring to the:

"Add or remove Programs" icon.

2) The corresponding control panel applet is:

...\windows\system32\appwiz.cpl

3) It is run beneath the Windows 32-bit DLL launcher:

...\windows\system32\rundll32.exe

This is the task you will see in the Task Manager.

4) You can run this control applet manually by using:

START ---> RUN: appwiz.cpl

If the RUN command is not on the START MENU,
you will have to re-enable it:

RIGHT click on the taskbar and chose properties,
-----> Start menu ---> customize ----> advanced ----->
scroll down to the RUN command item and put a check
mark beside it.

5) But first you want to make sure the file is legit, not a virus.
Locate the file, right-click, chose properties and...check

The copy right, date and size:

Size = 549.888 bytes (on XP pro SP2)
Date = August 4, 2004, 12:56:58 AM
File Version = 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Company = Microsoft

You may need to go into your Windows Explorer settings
and enable the display of hidden and system files.

6) Scan the file with several anti-viruses

7) This file is protected by system restore and by the Windows
File Protection System

This means that if you try to delete or replace it, Windows
will instantly undo all you efforts. If a virus succeeds in
damaging this file, however, the damage will stick and
resist repair.

8) If the file is rogue or damaged, try to download a bonifide
replacement. Windows Installation disk or microsoft is
the best. Be ware of rogue sites, giving away viruses.

Then

Delete all instances, in all directories, of Appwiz.cpl

You will get some warnings from windows, ignore them all.
It may also give you the option to replace the file from the
installation or service pack disk.

Put back the GOOD appwiz.cpl into the system32 directory,
reboot windows and it should work.

Windows XP: How to link to the Control Panel from My Computer

The Control Panel is one of the most useful places in Windows XP to go when you need to change a setting or reconfigure a feature or function. It consists of a group of individual applets, and each applet deals with a specific part of your system.

Typically on most Windows XP systems, the Control Panel can be accessed directly from the Start menu, either as a submenu or as a link. However, you can also add the Control Panel to your My Computer folder, so that when you open My Computer, a link to the Control Panel will appear toward the bottom of the window. It will be displayed in the "Other" category (below "Hard Disk Drives" and "Devices with Removable Storage").

To enable the Control Panel to be displayed in My Computer, follow the steps below:

A. Open My Computer (or any other folder).

B. Click Tools on the menu bar.

C. Choose Folder Options.

D. In the Folder Options window, click on the View tab.

E. Scroll down the list of advanced settings until you see an option labeled "Show Control Panel in My Computer."

F. Put a check in the box next to that option.

G. Click Apply to save the change, or click OK to save and exit.

Now open My Computer -- you should see the Control Panel icon under your storage devices. If you ever want to remove the Control Panel icon from My Computer, follow the steps above but remove the check mark from the display option and then click Apply or OK.

For Windows XP
Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.
If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.
Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.
Now, Double click on the Display icon to open up the Display Properties Window.
Then click on the Appearance tab at the top of the screen.
At the bottom left side of the screen you will see an area to change the Font Size:
Use your mouse to switch between normal, large and extra large according to your preference.
Then click on the OK button to save your changes and exit Display Properties window.
Windows XP will immediately adjust to your new Font Size without restarting your system.
Then close the Control Panel to return back to your Windows Session.
