I bought this CD player in 1989 and all of a sudden it stops reading CD's. I bought a similar Technics CD player on Ebay and when I received it the same problem occurred. this seems like a common problem for Technics CD players, would you know if it can be fixed or what the exact problem is?

These models use the 12.1 philips laser mechanism and your right it is a very common problem.
various marantz / philips / cyrus cd players etc also use it and are plagued with the same fault.
it's a 90% chance the laser is dead!
philips realised the unreliability of this laser and uprated it to the identical looking VAM-12.
do not dismiss the spindle motor as these also fail quite alot on this mechanism.

hope this helps.

How should you connect your CD player to your av amp (both Technics) using an fibre optical cable?

It sounds like your CD player does not have an optical audio output. If so, you will need to get a "Digital to Analog Audio Converter". You can find them on eBay or Amazon for as little as $10. Connect your CD player's analog/RCA-style stereo cables to the converter. Then connect the converter to your receiver with a single optical cable. 6_20_2016_11_27_39_am.png

The Optical Pickup(laser) has worn out. When you place a disc in the drawer, it has to load and read the TOC(table of contacts) if if can't read that, it assumes there is no CD in the drawer and stops or ejects.

Technics CD player stops playing offer 30 seconds

More than likely 1 of 2 things (or both) have failed...
1) CD Mechanism failure. This is the actual lens and CD tray that holds the CD.
2) The load motor. This is the motor that controls the movement of the CD lens.
If either of these has failed, you'll need to replace the CD Mechanism entirely. All depends on the model CD player you have. If it's a Technics, 99.9% chance part is no longer available, since the ENTIRE Technics line is no more. So the only parts you will find are what is left. They do not manufacturer anything new.

Disc ejection

You fix it by returning it to the guy who bought it and getting your money back. Call eBay customer service.
If it is too late, tell me more. Does the disc go right in and then right out? Does it try to read it first?

I have an old Technics SA-GX300 receiver that works fine except that the screen indicates that muting is on (still produces volume but at much lower levels). I lost the remote to the receiver. Is there...

Reliance on the remote instead of walking across the room to touch the unit will not solve anything. On many receivers, Muting is cancelled if the volume knob is turned to a louder level. Try that.

There's a used original remote for $12 delivered on eBay right now.

Technics cd player

It sounds like maybe your CD player is now connected to a different input on your amplifier. In such a case, if you turn the amp right up you will just about be able to hear any other sources that are connected & sending audio to the amp.

Turn the amp down to a sensible volume (to avoid possibility of heart attack from the shock of the loud music suddenly returning!), and flick through the other inputs on your amp. If this doesn't help, check your connections & make sure the CD player isn't connected to the tape in or out on your amp.
