2009 Harley Classic Glide. How can I find the source of an oil leak?

This is a simple case of hunting for it.
**NOTE** Regularly check your oil levels until you fix the leak!*
Take a good look at the engine using a flashlight, (torch), and see how high up the engine the oil is covering the thickest. Oil can leak from high up and dribble down to the floor so start at the top of the engine. Examine one cylinder at a time, (and from both sides), to work out which cylinder could have the leak. This will also give you a clue as to where the leak might be. You might have to remove some of the fairings and trim panels to do this.
Oil covering Low down, check the Oil Pan gasket and drain plug washer. DON'T over tighten the drain plug as the oil pan is soft metal and you could easily strip out the threads.(25Nm/18ftlbs max).
At Middle level, Check the Crankcase gaskets and seals.
At High level, check the Head gaskets and the Valve Cover gaskets.
You could try degreasing and deep cleaning the entire bike engine and using it for a 2 or 3 days. This way the oil leak will be more obvious as it will be showing up on a clean surface.
Oil leaks could be from any point on an engine where there is a joint. Check around the filler hole as this might be loose or there has been overspill the last time it was filled.
If these check show nothing you may have to get the engine looked at for more serious damage.

Iv'e just stripped down and repaired my gearbox on my scooter. however i don't know what oil, grease is required could you help.

hji, on most scooters it recommended you use a semi fluid grease, recommend by shoprider on their scooters... plain grease is not ideal as it sticks to the sides of the casing , not lubricating anything ...

a thickest oil would also be ideal, however remember if no gasket is fitted it may leak...hence the semi fluid route..

Oil level TDM 850 without oil level window

The tdm is a dry sump engine where the oil is in a tank under the seat and is pumped around the engine and returned to the tank by a scavenger pump in the bottom of the engine so a level window on the engine is not required

2004 honda 350 fourtrax exhaust seat loose in head. What years of honda 350 heads will fit a 2004

Do I take it the engine is already stripped to establish the fault. I've owned several Honda's and never seen this fault. If its in bits a good motorcycle engine shop could do it and recut the seat but only a search of parts books would tell you if Honda used a motorcycle head. Saying that, Honda do appear to use modified bike engines to power quads. New crank cases built onto a previous barrel and head.
Call a Honda specialist or a quad shop who may have already worked it out for themselves. Check out quad forums as well?

What kind of transmission oil should I use for a FXSTD 2000

Your bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil in the engine, primary case, and transmission. There are many other brands of oil that can be used however. Go to their websites and check for their recommendations. Personally, I like the H-D semi-synthetic primary and transmission lube made for the earlier bikes. I think the transmission runs quieter with it in there.

Good Luck
