I'd like to know if there is a firmware update available for my sb5120 modem and how i would go about doing it

Cox says my SB5120 is resetting 12 pulse times a

May be firmware get corrupted due to power-cut or an excess voltage or surge problem.
At times when there is thunder-storm a lot of excess volatge is generated on the phone wire which is link down to the modem

try to download recent firmware from manufacturer and see if it can be updated.

Connecting the device, see the "Quick Reference Guide":

For installing the modem the easiest way is to run the provided cdrom.
When not available perform the settings as showed in the guides.

See page 7 "Before You Begin" for the requirements and selecting either USB or Ethernet connection.

Page 22 gives the overview for the pages how to configure ethernet settings.

Are you just using a modem and NO router? This modem has no NAT so there is no way to open ports.
