My air conditioner is approx. 7 years old ( carrier model no. bca101r ) and just started to leak water into the room through the seam in the front cover. I took it apart and cleaned it but that didn't stop the leak. It drains water out the back drain but still leaks into the room.
The water leak is not a big concern -other than the mess it causes, but as to the AC's operational status it is supposed to draw water/humidity from the 'cooling space' so - it's still doing it's job (I'm assuming it's cooling too).
As to the water - I would check the drain to be sure it's not clogged up - which is usually the problem. If the drain is clear and the AC is draining (to the outside) properly - I would then check and make sure the AC is tilted backwards out the window.

Most likely yours has a scroll compressor which are notorious for being quite loud on start they will start for years, just a liitle noisy. Is the water from the pvc drain or from the base of the outdoor unit??
