I have a Canon MP730 printer that suddenly stopped printing in black ink. I did all of the troubleshooting options in the book. I did each option in the maintenance: head cleaning, refreshing, roller cleaning. I bought a new printhead, installed it and aligned it. I put in a new black ink cartridge. Is there anything else to be done or do I just need a new printer? All of the color inks will print.

This printer is certainly not a pos. You have just invested $50 in a new print head, so the print head should not be the problem. If nothing has changed since you replaced the print head, the old one may not have been the source of your problem. I am assuming the colour cartridges are not empty, not clogged, have the seal off, and are perfect. I would try to copy in colour, just to make sure the colour is not printing. If you still get only black, then it is probably your contacts, and this may seem crude, but remove the print head, get a knife and scrape those contacts on your carriage, they are flexible, so dont worry. Give each column a couple of scrapes. Put your print head back in there, lever down, cartridges in, and see what happens.

First you open the thing up, there is a button on the right side. The printer, if on will center the carriage. Remove your cartridges. There is a grey lever on the right, lift it up. Between your thumb and index finger, grasp the pring head and pull it up out of there. Dont touch the contacts at the back. Run it under warm water for about 5 minutes or until the water dripping off the bottom is clear, slow running water, and dont aim it at those silvery things. Give it a shake. Put it back in there, lever down, cartridges in, and hope for the best.

Howdy there! I know you cleaned things up, did you try rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip to the cartridge AND the intake well? Also, lets power off the machine, take out the cartridges and wait 12 minutes, that will clear the memory chip, then power it back up, without ink, add that after it tells you too, that way you will get a proper allignment page and with the cleaning again, should kick out the right gear. Also, you can check in the tech side. If you are comfortable, we can also discuss that---FILE/PRINT/ADVANCED/General everyday printing..... PLEASE let me know if these do not work, we can go a tad further is needed, it is a pleasure to assist you today..... Guy

You could clean the black ink cartridge. For this you need to remove the black ink cartridge which is present in the printer. In order to clean the laser or scanner block you could use a cotton swab as it would fully clean the dirt. You need to clean the grime and the dried ink present in the printer. This would remove all the hindrances which prevent the ink from flowing. Cleaning the printer heads would also help to solve the problem.
