O heck my friend, the reason cameras eat tapes is simply because the capstan and heads need cleaning, odd how everyone forgets cleaning these last 10 years. David

Hi, If video head got clogged then camcorder wont read tape in playback so result comes as blue screen. Please use video head cleaning tape and clean video head of camcorder. This will solve your problem. Video-8 head cleaning tape is available with amazon.com Thanks.
You cannot play SVHS tapes on a standard VHS machine. Your solution is to either: 1. Buy an SVHS Home unit (not a great idea) 2. Use regular VHSC tapes in your camcorder (these will playback fine in your existing home unit). 3. Hook your camcorder directly into your TV and use the camera as a playback device.
In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.
Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.
If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.
You can see an image in a camcorder viewfinder any time the camera's actually on in record mode, whether or not the camcorder is actually recording. So that's no guarantee.
Assuming the obvious (you have the right kind of tapes, they're not in write-protect mode, you rewind before playing, etc). I recommend that you borrow a tape of the same kind from someone else and check it on playback in your camcorder. This should lead you know understand if you have a playback problem or a recording problem.
